Deserts

A myth about the existence of deserts.

The Earth, when it was still young, used to be all green and thriving and full of forests. There was not a place that you could look that did not have plants and trees in it. There were no dead spots, or places where the trees did not grow and the plants withered. It was all beautiful and full of life.

There was a king of this beautiful Earth. His name was Galosius. He had everything that any person could ever want in their life. He possessed all worldly goods and had power over every living being on the face of the Earth. He was very blessed indeed. King Galosius also had one other thing: the heart of his wife and queen Eliza. She would do anything for him, but also she could convince him of anything. Her persuasive powers often gentled the hand of her king when his rage ruled him.

However, once there was a time she was attempting to save a race of peoples who had disobeyed one of the laws laid out specifically by the king. Queen Eliza stepped between the King and the cowering people. She calmed the tower of rage and convinced him of a gentler punishment for them, but he wasn’t totally dissuaded. He decided later that he would make one of them do something in penalty of the actions of the others. So he forced them to select one of their companions and they sent Darius forward, along with their best wishes.

Galosius took Darius inside his palace, after sending the others of his people away. He set a task aside for him that he thought would take Darius the rest of his life, if not longer. He told him to take all of the sand out of the oceans and search for the ring of Galosius’s father which was dropped a century ago, before Galosius was born. So, he set him about his task and left to relax in his bed, quite content.

Darius was a very industrious young chap, so he set about his job quickly. He dug and dug, searching for the ring. He threw every shovelful in every direction, causing piles to cover many of the forested regions of the Earth. Finally, a few decades later, Eliza noticed this new development when out on a trip around her husband’s paradise. She stormed to her husband, insisting that he allow Darius to stop. She had two reasons of this, that she cared about people and that Darius was covering their kingdom with the sand that didn’t belong there.

Galosius noticed then that his forests were being covered and polluted with the sand and taking away their life. There were giant patches where all he could see was miles and miles of sand and this was not in his plans. So he halted Darius’s work and glanced over the damage with his wife, but it was already done. There was no way that they could move all that sand back into the ocean without an inconvenient amount of work. So this is the reason that there are varying sizes of patches of desert in the world.
