Devon Crenshaw
An undiscovered Urban Legend.
About two years ago some friends of mine were hanging out watching movies, then my friend Davis went to check his email. He cam back into the room slightly shaken. He said that he’d just recieved an email from a man by the name of Devon Crenshaw. The email said that he wanted to play The Riddle Game with us and that he meant us no harm and it contained this first riddle:
I never was, am always to be,
None ever saw me, nor ever will,
And yet I am the confidence of all
Who live and breathe on this terrestrial ball.
We figured the answer was hope. And when we sent back the response, turns out we were right.
There were six of us there and we all went to check our email on various devices, and sure enough we had all gotten a cc. We didn’t know what to do, should we play or leave it alone? We decided to take a chance and play, and so started the riddle game. We answered the first three riddles correctly, and even the Devon Crenshaw offered help we didn’t take it and answered the fourth riddle wrong. Then the emails suddenly stopped.
After that my friends and I become obessed with finding out more about this Devon Crenshaw guy. We scoured the webs and found nothing, just a really sparce facebook page. Then another friend of mine found this website. It was simply called “The Riddle Game” and had all this “history” on the game there.
According to the website, which is probably bogas, it had this to say. The riddle game aparently started as far back as the 1800’s when Mary Shelly and her husband Percy went to stay the summer with Lord Byron. They recieved a letter in July that contained a riddle much like the one my friends and I had gotten. They played the riddle game and lost as well. History is riddled with groups who’ve tried to play the game and lost.
Devon Crenshaw is also covered in the website briefly, it says that his parents Lord and Lady Crenshaw were exhiled by King George the IV. To pass the time they would tell riddles to each other. Devon Crenshaw become obessed with the telling riddles and as he got older kept looking for more people to play his game with him. By the time he was a young adult he had won a ton of money by gambling and it’s said that if you win the riddle game you win the hidden fortune of the Crenshaw’s.
Years and years into the future people are still sent letters and emails to play the riddle game. Devon Crenshaw’s offspring are said to have taken over the game and still find people to play to this day.
I don’t know the whole thing is kind of stupid I guess. My friends and I tried to contact Devon Crenshaw again, but no response. The weird thing is, that about six months ago, my cousin’s friend Dana and a group of her friends recieved an email from Devon Crenshaw… I have yet to ask how it ended.
