Doomsday by Comet?

It happened once, can it happen again?

Some say lightning never strikes twice in the same spot, but can this be true about a comet?

About 65 million years ago in the Cretaceous Period, a massive comet hit the planet Earth, ending the 135 Million year reign of the most massive and dominant creatures on earth, the Dinosaurs. So it would bring a person to think, if it can happen to them, can it happen to us?

Well, in the Yucatán peninsula (which is off the coast of Mexico) a giant asteriod 10 kilometers traveling 30 km per second struck and deviated Earth. This extinction is known as the K-T extinction where the dinosaurs and over 70% of the species on Earth were wiped out. Records show that before this asteroid hit the dinosaurs were thriving and were not declining in abundance.

What if it happens in the 21 century? Well you would have a good change of surviving if the asteroid is smaller then 1/2 a kilometer, once an asteroid reaches the length of 1 kilometer or more everyone is pretty much gone. After the comet hit it would spew ash and dust into the atmosphere causing a global cooling. At this time most of the planets animal and plant life will die out. Then after a few months, all the ash falls to the ground there will be no plants left to convert the carbon dioxide to oxygen in the atmosphere, This will cause a greenhouse effect on earth and the planet would reach temperatures over 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. Then after a few years of that earth would go back to normal. So it very well could be the end of mankind.
