Legend or Myth?

Giant Squids are in books and movies, but are they real or just a myth?

Giant Squids have popped up in movies and even books, but are they just a mythical creature that is in books and did Hollywood make it up? Well they are real! They are very rare to find.

They are measured about 59 feet long. The squid is as long as a normal yellow school bus! It also nearly wieghs a ton(900 kg).  They live in the darkest depths of the ocean which makes it very hard for scientists to study them. The only way the scientists can study them is when the Giant Squid’s carcesses wash up on shore or have bee carried in by fishermen. It was almost impossible to take a picture or even study them alive, but luckily in 2004 Japan was able to take the first images of a female squid.

The squid has the largest eyes in the animal kingdom.  They measure 10 inches in diameter. Which means they can be as big as a beach ball. Their eyes have to be this huge so the eyes can detect any light and will be able to see in the dark depths when other animals could not see anything. Like other squids, the Giant Squid has 8 arms and 2 feeding arms. These help the squid to bring its food to its beak. The squid normally eats fish, shrimp, and other squid. Some suggest they even eat small whales.
