Mythical Creature: The Chupacabra
A brief bit of information about the cryptid known as chupucabra.
Chupucabra literally means goatsucker. It is a creature that has been reportedly seen in various parts of the Americas. Though associated most with Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Texas it has also been reported in Maine and Chile. In 2006, reports of chupacabra attacks came from Russia.
The chupucabra is described as having a thick, heavy, muscular body with several protruding spines, like reptiles, and about the size of a small bear. It is most commonly said to have greenish, scaly skin and to hop in a way similar to a kangaroo. Other reports describe a forked tongue, fangs and a smell like rotten eggs.
Animals reported to have been victims of the chupacabra are said to have puncture wounds present around the neck and chest and to be completely drained of blood. The most common animals to have been attacked are reportedly sheep and goats, hence the chupacabras name.
Some attacks on livestock thought to be committed by the legendary creature proved later to have been made by various predators with a particularly deforming strain of mange. Animals with this condition once thought to be chupacabras range from coyotes to different species of fox and dog.
One chupacabra’s remains were found in Blanco, Texas in 2009 by a taxidermist who believes the hairless, strange-liking animal to be a genetic mutation of a coyote. The remains have been sold to the Lost World museum where a university is supposed to be working with the museum to test the remains.
Whether or not the chupacabras is proven to be real, it has been the subject of fascination, speculation and fear and has made its appearances in science fiction and horror.
