Mythology’s Fascinating Creatures

Some of the common creatures in mythology explained.

Centaur 

A race of creatures having the head, arms, and torso of a man and the body and legs of a horse.

Cerberus

The three headed guard dog of Hades.

Chimera

A fire breathing monster with a lion’s head, a goat’s body, and a snakes tail.

Cyclops

Any race of one-eyed giants.

Griffin

A mythical creature with the head and wings of an eagle and body and legs of a lion.

Harpy 

A foul smelling, ugly monster having an old woman’s head, and the body, wings, and claws of a bird.

Hydra

A deadly snake-like monster that has nine heads and when one head is severed, two grow back in its place.

Medusa

A woman with snake for hair. The only mortal of the three Gorgons.

Minotaur 

A monster with the head of a bull and the body of a man housed in a labyrinth on the island of Crete.

Pegasus 

A white winged horse born when Medusas blood splattered into the sea when her head was severed.

Sphinx

A monster having the head and breasts of a woman, body of a lion, and wings of an eagle. This monster killed any person or thing who couldn’t answer its riddles.

Unicorn 

A horse with a single horn on its head, a symbol of purity.
