Nostradamus, The Mayan Calendar and The End of The World in 2012

by Patrick Bernauw in Folklore, October 6, 2009

Three good reasons why I don’t buy the so-called Doomsday Predictions, featuring Nostradamus and the Mayan Calendar.

  1. Nostradamus hasn’t said anything about the End of the World in 2012

There is not one single quatrain in the prophetic Centuries, written by Nostradamus, that says something about a major event in the year 2012. In the letter to his son Caesar, which also serves as a Preface to his Prophecies, made public in 1555, the prophet says his prophecies, “containing each 100 astronomic quatrains of forecasts, polished through obscurely”, are “perpetual” and “things that have been foreseen, from now to the year 3797″.

The website Nostradamus 2012: End of the World Prophesy (sic) states that there have been found “new writings of Nostradamus”, that previously have been hidden. The “Lost Book of Nostradamus”, discovered in the National Library, seems to contain his Doomsday 2012 Prophecy, and a “History Channel” has made a show on this topic on January 4, 2009. Of course, this can only be a hoax. Why should Nostradamus have written and published all these predictions from the 16th century to 3797, if he knew the world would end in 2012?

  2. The Mayan Calendar is a Calendar, not a Prophecy!

The 2012 Doomsday Fear Scam started with the Mayan Calendar, ending in 2012. But, as is said in this no-nonsense article on the Mayan Calendar, the fact that it ends in 2012 doesn’t mean the world will end in 2012. The Calendar just stopped… and that’s all. It is definitely a brilliant calendar system, developed as a means of measuring time.

I have a few questions for those who want to believe the Mayan Calendar is “prophetic”: which are the facts of the past centuries, foreseen by the Calendar? And how come the Maya’s did know the exact year when “the” world would meet its end, but did not know that “their” world and civilization would end very, very soon? If this Calendar was a prophetic one… it sure wasn’t a great success!

  3. The World Has Already Ended X Times Before!

In 234 A.D. one Hippolytus prophesied the Coming of the Antichrist, followed by the return of the Lord. The world would last 6,000 years and since Adam was born in 5,500 B.C., the world would end in 500 A.D. In 989 Halley’s Comet would destroy the earth and at the end of the first millennium there was a mass hysteria regarding the Second Coming (bis). 1666 was the Year of the Beast – but the world wasn’t destroyed (only London, by the Great Fire). The Jehovah’s Witnesses predicted Doomsday in 1874, 1878, 1881, 1910, 1914, 1918, 1925, 1975 and 1984.

In 1982 there was – again – much talk about a Second Coming. Christ had already returned to earth in 1977 and was living among a group of Pakistani in London. We all remember 1999, featuring the famous Nostradamus quatrain 72 (Century 10):

In the year 1999, in the seventh month,

from the sky will come a great King of Terror

Eli Eshoh predicted that the world would end in 1998. Afterwards, he reassured us the Rapture took place on June 6, 1998. It wasn’t noticed because only 603,729 people were taken up. (You may ask yourself why none of the relatives of these people has noticed they didn’t return home.)

Divide 2000 by 3 an you get 666.666 – the Devil’s Number. Millennium Countdown… All computers probably were going to crash and the Antichrist was coming, Armageddon was near.

In 2003 a group of aliens warned us that the earth would be destroyed by a comet.

The Bible is believed to contain a code which can be used to predict the End of the World. The history of Mankind was charted from the birth of Adam (4027 B.C.) to Armageddon, which would be the result of a truly horrific Third World War, starting in 2008.

Doomsday Vault

What worries me the most about these Doomsday Fear Scams, is that we tend to forget the real dangers and challenges the earth is facing as a result of, for instance, global warming or nuclear proliferation… Take here a tour of the Global Seed Vault in Norway, providing a place to store agricultural seeds, hoping of securing crop diversity at risk from man-made disasters, climate changes or diseases…

good article. people should think more about 2100 by which time the sea water level would probably rise more than 1 meter. it would be the end of the world for many island and coastal nations. we need to address that first and not waste our resources analysing and deciphering such superstitious prophecies

Interesting, well-researched article. I wonder what it is about our psyches that predispose us to be captivated by theories about the end of the world. So many religions and belief systems have some version of this mythology. The Global Seed Vault in Norway is a little worrisome. I agree that if the end of the world comes, it will be caused by people.

I agree that we should not be panicking as we draw nearer to 2012. It is true that Nostradamus does not predict that the world will end in 2012, and as you\’ve pointed out, has predictions extending much farther into the future. He *does* suggest that the world will experience drastic changes around that time, however. Similarly, the ancient Mayans did not say the all would be destroyed in 2012, but that the world would experience a great shift, or transformation. Cataclysmic? Maybe, there is much debate. Change – definitely, according to them.

Good article on a fascinating subject. It is widely thought that psychics and prophets have a difficult time with dates as, it is said, that “time” works very differently on “the other side.” Earth time is linear and it has been theorized that in other dimensions, time isn’t linear at all. So, I can’t get all worked up about disasters that mention specific dates.

And, who’s calendar are we talking about?

Good piece! And, good food for thought.

    On October 7, 2009 at 1:04 am

Here is an objective approach to your article.

While your article has depth and research behind it, your first argument does not actually contain any quotes about the year 2012, so, while the argument has its circumstantial feasibility, unless you actually quote it and point it out, there is no reason for anyone to believe that Nostradamus did not make a prediction for 2012. Have you actually read any of these prophetic stanzas and seen otherwise?

The second point of your argument has its credibility, but here: “…just stopped… and that’s all.” you used an ellipsis where a comma should be. Actually, you could also do away with and.

Your question, “which are the facts of the past centuries, foreseen by the Calendar?” needs more clarity. “What events, through the centuries, have been foreseen by the Mayan Calendar? What has the Mayan Calendar successfully foreseen? Etc..” There are better ways to ask the question. The use of which and the comma are stumbling blocks here.

Your “boy who cried wolf” theory behind your third argument is not exactly proof of anything. Yes, these doomsday predictions have come and gone with no annihilatory results, but as surely as Peter encountered the wolf in the “boy who cried wolf” story, so will we, someday. It is better to be wary than to be sorry.

I also wondered why you didn’t write out the full quatrain from Nostradamus’s prediction. And, your info about the bible’s lineage from Adam to Jesus and beyond doesn’t sound like any number I’ve ever heard before. Not to mention: who’s to say that a third world war hasn’t already begun?

When it comes to analyzing such curious predictions, especially since most of them involve either superstition or religion, it’s quite important to maintain an open mind, to ensure that a proper and unbiased analysis occurs. You really shouldn’t limit your beliefs simply because of your prejudiced passions. For the sake of your own mind’s health, never turn a blind eye to a possibility that no one really knows anything of. While you do this with some areas of this article, other areas are not as lucky to escape your doubt.

I’m with the solar flare brigade, I think we’ll all fry…..Either that, or we’re all going first get wet from rising tides, second get drenched by a deep impact, third go hungry from crops not being pollenated by our disappearing bees, and fourth freeze to death in a global ice-age quickly following our current warming period, oh and of course there’s the ever present threat of the poles reversing, causing who knows what. Live your life, and don’t let worry about these things get you down. Live for now, and make now good……………….and remember…….there’s nothing an agnostic can’t do, if he doesn’t really know whether he believes in anything or not……..

Enjoyed your article, well written and presented. The world may end in 2012 though I would bet against it. It may last until 3797, what matters is will we still be here tomorrow? Given the disasters that befall countries throughout the world, it really should make us appreciate the life we have, no matter how tedious it may seem at times? I have to remind myself on a continuous basis.

to quote Jesus in Matthew 24:36 considering that day or hour no one knows not even the son (Jesus) but he did tell us to keep in expectation of it, when your following Gods law of love you don’t have to worry about when but if there are clues you see in events around you nothing is wrong with wanting it to come sooner than later. Just because a pregnant woman has false labor it does,t mean she is not pregnant. If as you say Nastradomas was wrong in a few things than maybe you should change your map, the bible has never been wrong, but the problem is it does not agree with what man wants to do such as fornication and the like, the question then becomes why even look at a map you don’t intend to follow

Most likely, there will not be any disasters in 2012 that are of much greater magnitude than the disasters that have been occurring all along throughout history. However, Nostradamus could easily keep predicting into the 3000s if 2012 was a year of doom. 2012 is not really supposed to be the end of the world. If anything, it is predicted to be a huge change, and, perhaps, large numbers of people and other species dying. So, Nostradamus would simply be predicting events that happen after a big change. As far as the Mayan calendar, perhaps it ends now because the Mayans end, and why keep a calendar when its people have changed or are gone. I believe there are only a few Mayans left in Central America, and that they are assimilating into the modern world, so it would make sense that the calendar would be finished as the people merge into the rest of the world’s cultures and modern way of life.

Maybe it\’s been kept under wraps but there IS a meteor set to come dangerously close to the earth in 2012. I always found that to be an interesting fact. Also people wouldn’t just go crazy over the Mayan calender so there has to be more. I’ve done my studies and I’ve found some interesting facts.

The Mayans were very accurate with their calender and they kept going with their calender till they had logged thousands of years in the future. So why would they be unable to go past that point.

Anyway good article, the seed bank is important . . . however without humans to work it . . . it kinda fails. The issue is saving ourselves from those disasters so that we can use those seeds. Their not going to plant themselves.

I believe that man kind is not skilled to understand when the true end of the world will be. Jesus made it clear that not even He knew when it was going to be. What makes us think we are smarter than Jesus? I also think that it’s harmful as a society for man kind to know when the end of the world will be even if we could understand it. Let’s say that it’s true: the end of the world will be in 2012. What’s man kind’s incentive to continue making goals for ourselves and working toward anything? Why should we start college? We won’t be around long enough to finish it. Why plan to have a family? We won’t be around long enough to love and enjoy them. It’s pointless to predict when the end will be because we don’t know.

I would not be surprised if the world ended in 2012. Not because some calendar ended or some prophet said so, but lets face it, we have a incredible solar flare coming up that may fry our ozone layer & we are all toast. We have a asteroid heading our way that if it doesn’t hit us in 2012, it will in 2028 if our gravitational pull nudges it a little. We have a bunch of nutts on this planet that want nuclear weapons & swear up & down that Israel & some of us others should be wiped off the face of the earth. How soon will a attack happen? Probably in a few years. Lots of stuff staring us in the face for 2012 just to go along with the calendar & other predictions. When it comes to the Bible, remember what it says about earthquakes & such. What’s been happening the past few weeks? Makes you wonder, at least a little bit.

Wow, this is a really good article. I was being educated and laughing, haha. I like that part of the Jehovas Witnesses predicting the dooms day like ten times. I believe in the bible but nobody has accurately decypher when the end of the world is. The bible actually says that not even the son of God ( i believe Jesus) knows when the end of the world is. It is only in the hands of the Father. Interesting..

I find it incredibly silly how humanity has always desired to predict it’s own extinction. It is evitable … one day, but the constant want to plan a date … to prove and/or rationalize a particular future event … it is pointless. Good article though – everyone likes to read such trivial ideas and interesting stories …

It seems death, destruction and hope for a new world seems to inspire all those people who propagate the End of the world. Its for some new seed to be born. There seems so much misery surrounding every one that the conclusion is lets hope for a new world, new light to lead us. ” well to all those propagandist this is my message, the world will be there but in more misery than what we are currently, with the drastic climatic conditions (Global warming), deforestation, plundering the worlds natural resources by some greedy few nations for their consumption. Now this our root problem. all the nations of the world should come to gather for all mankind, its not enough to Just state ” For all Mankind” but it should be affirmative. we should act on it. “I ASK ALL THE PEOPLE READING THIS BLOG” don’t you think we can make this world a paradise or should we let the chosen few to led us to our death and destruction.

The big questions to be asked is, ” why should there be poverty in the world? why should there be wars and terrorism, why are we seeing today dramatic climatic changes? we humans, call our selves the highest in the evolution, then why do u discriminate your fellow being by race, color, sex. Cant we take a stand”

I don’t agree with the end of the world preachers and promoters, but the way we are going its happening in small stages, well our hero the Simpson of tomorrow will definitely be in a world where food would be scarce, probably wearing a Gas mask, well you can add to it, like say, mutated due to the high level of toxins, temperatures would sore high in the day like living in the Kalahari and sores down like in the antarctic. ” well i like that place blissful with no people to bug you” and the rest i will leave it to ur imagination.

Conclusion: This world the Gaya the spirit of the earth is patient well its now we act or never will the Simpson of tomorrow see what we can see today.

did ya ever think the end of the world could be caused by global governments? the swine flu has noting to do with any sort of animal. it was designed in a laboratory. now your government wants to vaccinate everyone. the vaccine is more deadlier than the virus. it is tageted towards the young, elderly, sick, and black population. remember aids? that was another government plot to wipe out the earths population the weakening dollar, and the world wants to stop using the dollar as currency. the government we have now is ready to hand us over to the world. and all we are going to do is sit back and let it happen. 2012 might be the year for all of this to come together. all governments all around the globe want to erase the population, so they can exploit whats left of our national resources and profit from whats left. why do you think our politicians have such great health benefits, and the citizens are struggling to get them? so the politicians can stay healthy, and sickness and disease will wipe out the population. weve all heard about healthcare reform in the past from how many presidents? each one has promised us a better day, and what have we seen? rising prices on everything, an economy that is on the brink of failure. washington is in no hurry to get things done, because its not in their best interest. but, then again on 2012 if nothing happens, i could be wrong….lets all hope so

Patrick – loved your article and thankyou for the link. If you get a moment, drop a comment on my hub – the Mayan Calendar – and link back.

The calendar was actually a bastardized version, the Aztecs first came up with it\’s basic form. And as you rightly stated, the calendar ends because all calendars do. Unless you\’re bored enough to create an ad nauseum one. To be fair, the Maya had a bit of patience creating the one in question.

And you know … the Maya were quite a murderous bunch, among other things. Whilst I would never question their architectural brilliance, cultural organization and mathematical/astronomical aptitude, you have to temper all that with the fact that they simply weren\’t a propehetic nation.

And the Nostrodamus angle is just more salt. Funny how 20 years ago he wasn\’t heard of re 2012 … and now it\’s discovered there\’s previously missed documents alluding to the prophecy? Garbage.

Doomsday prophecies generate big piles of money. And it\’s worth noting thath there\’s been over 200 different portents of global-ish doom … many of which have passed, without incident.

The only thing that\’s likely to kill us in our lifetimes is either us … some idiot with his finger on too many buttons. Or the swine flu. Or the fear of it. Or maybe it\’s the vanccinations?

Good stuff Patrick – nicely pulled together. Great package.

    Cheers – Andria

Great article Patrick. I like this type of literature. The earth will end at some point. It’s a scientific fact that our sun will blow up at some point in time. I doubt anytime soon and if the earth is desimated, it will be at the hands of mankind and our ignorance to protect the souce of life. OUR EARTH is Mother Nature and if anything happens to humanity it will be nuclear or a plague of some sort by the hands of mankind. That’s my prediction!

PRETRIB RAPTURE – HIDDEN FACTS !

How can the “rapture” be “imminent”? Acts 3:21 says that Jesus “must” stay in heaven (He is now there with the Father) “until the times of restitution of all things” which includes, says Scofield, “the restoration of the theocracy under David’s Son” which obviously can’t begin before or during Antichrist’s reign. Since Jesus must personally participate in the rapture, and since He can’t even leave heaven before the tribulation ends, the rapture therefore cannot take place before the end of the trib! Paul explains the “times and the seasons” (I Thess. 5:1) of the catching up (I Thess. 4:17) as the “day of the Lord” (5:2) (which FOLLOWS the posttrib sun/moon darkening – Matt. 24:29; Acts 2:20) WHEN “sudden destruction” (5:3) of the wicked occurs! (If the wicked are destroyed before or during the trib, who would be left alive to serve the Antichrist?) Paul also ties the change-into-immortality “rapture” (I Cor. 15:52) to the posttrib end of “death” (15:54)! (Will death be ended before or during the trib?) If anyone wonders how long pretrib rapturism has been taught, he or she can Google “Pretrib Rapture Diehards.” Many are unaware that before 1830 all Christians had always viewed I Thess. 4’s “catching up” as an integral part of the final second coming to earth. In 1830 it was stretched forward and turned into a separate coming of Christ. To further strengthen their novel view, which the mass of evangelical scholars rejected throughout the 1800s, pretrib teachers in the early 1900s began to stretch forward the “day of the Lord” (what Darby and Scofield never dared to do) and hook it up with their already-stretched-forward “rapture.” Many leading evangelical scholars still weren’t convinced of pretrib, so pretrib teachers then began teaching that the “falling away” of II Thess. 2:3 is really a pretrib rapture (the same as saying that the “rapture” in 2:3 must happen before the “rapture” ["gathering"] in 2:1 can happen – the height of desperation!). Other Google articles throwing light on long-covered-up facts about the 178-year-old pretrib rapture view include “Famous Rapture Watchers,” “X-Raying Margaret,” “Revisers of Pretrib Rapture History,” “Thomas Ice (Bloopers),” “Wily Jeffrey,” “The Rapture Index (Mad Theology),” “America’s Pretrib Rapture Traffickers,” “Roots of (Warlike) Christian Zionism,” “Scholars Weigh My Research,” “Pretrib Hypocrisy,” “Pretrib Rapture Desperados” and “Deceiving and Being Deceived” – all by the author of the bestselling book “The Rapture Plot” which is available at Armageddon Books online. Just my two cents’ worth.
