by Samantha J T in Folklore, October 30, 2008

Old wives’ tales are a type of urban legend which is passed down to younger generation’s. Old wives’ tales usually consist of superstition, folklore or unverified claims with exaggerated and/or untrue details but is this the case with all old wives’ tales?
Can you guess which are true and which are false?

Chocolate causes acne. Chocolate does not cause acne in healthy individuals but can have an extreme effect if one is sensitive to any of the ingredients it contains. However caffeine contained in many chocolate products can cause increased stress which can temperarily increase acne to individuals that are already affected, therefore chocolate can sometimes cause acne. TRUE and FALSE

Having sex standing up is a contraceptive. It is possible to get pregnant in almost any position however sex standing up makes deep penetration more difficult BUT sperm cells are capable of swimming up the viginal canal. This form of ‘contraception’ has a guarantee of about 0.01% so this is seen as TRUE and FALSE

Masturbation causes blindness. The only connection with the two is that semen contains a large amount of zinc, by maturbating you loose  zinc with your semen but masturbating alone will not loose enough zinc to make you blind. That makes masturbation causes blindness FALSE

If you sneeze with your eyes open your eyes will fall out. The reason some people believe this to be true is because sneezing is a rapid motion and uses much force. It is impossible to sneeze with your eyes open therefore making this to be FALSE

Wrap up warm you’ll catch a cold. The only way to catch a cold is through the spread of coughing and sneezing. Wrapping up warm will not stop a cold, making this FALSE

To be continued…….
