Psychic Vampires

Not all vampires drink blood.

Let me begin this article by stating that I have never read or seen Twilight and am not just another vampire-obsessed teen. That being said, yes this article is about vampires, but not the kind one usually sees in vampire films. This article about the people known as the psychic vampires. The term “psychic” does not mean that vampires have any special precognitive abilities, rather it refers to the mental energy these vampires are said to drain from people.

Long before movies featuring Dracula and his bloodsucking companions, there were the “real” vampires, the psychic vampires. Psychic vampire legends have been around for thousands of years and probably, in part, inspired the common vampire tales. Instead of preying on the blood of others, psychic vampires were said to suck the energy from people.

Psychic vampires could literally be anyone. They could be of any race or religion. They could be male, female, adult, child, rich, poor, etc. Often times these psychic vampires are people magnets. Like Dracula, they seem incredibly charming and attractive to people who don’t know them very well. This trait is probably a subconscious way of drawing people to feed on their energy.

Most psychic vampires do not realize that they drain other people’s energy. Usually it an unconscious action used to fill their own energy needs. The majority of psychic vampires are people who, for whatever reason, are energy deficient, or have trouble making their own energy. The explanations for this lack of energy range from missing chakras to a physical accident that left a person weak and in need of others’ energy. As such, they subconsciously feed off of other people’s energy, thus leaving the “victims” exhausted.

Psychic vampires were also said to have rather high opinions of themselves. Though they often run around spouting negativity, vampires believe that they themselves always view the glass half full, a claim that is often scoffed at by people who know the vampire well. When confronted with the possibility that they do steal other people’s energy, psychic vampires will generally deny the claims vehemently. While vampirism was not necessarily hereditary, it was believed that a person with a vampire for a parent was more likely to become a vampire themselves, due to a need to replenish energy after having been “fed” off of for so many years.

While it seems a very negative thing, the energy feeding habits of psychic vampires were not always viewed as bad. In fact, in the old legends many psychic vampires had the ability to transmute negative energy into positive energy. This was usually done by vampires who had been “awakened,” meaning that they were aware of their vampire tendencies. Awakened vampires were said to sometimes use their abilities to heal others. They would draw the negative energy, such as an illness, from a person, then subconsciously turn it into positive energy for themselves. Such a use created a win-win situation, as the vampire was able to draw much needed energy, and the other person received a much needed cleansing of negative energy.

Psychic vampire legends are not yet passé, there are still many who strongly believe in these energy thieves. I’m sure we all know a person or two who leaves us fatigued after spending only a few minutes in their presence! There has been modern research done with techniques such as aura photography on the subject. During experiments, it was shown that when a person is under the “attack,” of a psychic vampire, the “victim’s” aura contracts as the vampire feeds. Prolonged exposure to such energy draining vampires can often lead to real physical illness, just like with any other mental stress in life. So the next time you feel like just being around a person is literally making you sick, you might be right!
