Robin Hood
Robin Hood is a legendary figure in our history. Those all around the world would know about the tale of this man, from movies, the internet, books or television shows. But who was Robin Hood, and did he really exist? The legend has probably changed so many times; people probably forgot what the first story was.
The first writing ever recorded of Robin Hood was in Andrew in Wyntoun’s Orygynale Chronicle, written in the early 15th century. There are lines written in this writing that is seen as the first mention of his legend:
Lytil Jhon and Robyne Hude
Wayth-men ware commendyd gude
In English-Wood and Barnysdale
Thai oysyd all this tyme thare trawale.
After that, there were other stories, including something from Shakespeare, about him, and this tells us that there could have been a real person that resembled Robin Hood. This could mean there were many Robin Hoods, not only one, and the stories were based on them.
Robin Hood is known to be in the medieval period (middle ages). He was seen as a charitable character, for he helped a person and gave them more than what they asked for. He was known to be a great leader, for when he ran through Sherwood Forest for the first time, he was greeted by a bunch of convicts and they all asked him to become their leader. He stayed at the Major Oak in Sherwood, which is now hundreds of years old, and needing supports to stay up.
The interest of Hood was probably because of the amount of poor people in those days. Robin and his band of merry men stole from those who were rich and used that to give to the disadvantaged poor. They were very grateful, and he was considered an outlaw to the king and the Sherriff of Nottingham, so that could have been the thing to put him in the record books.
Humans may never know the truth of this legend and whether there was any other text before what was seen to be the first found. I think this could very well be correct. However, now we just see the story to be a famous legend, and a motion picture, as entertainment and curiosity. Others in the future might be compelled to research some more with this as motivation, and we may figure out a lot more than we used to.
