Sir Ector, King Arthur’s Foster Father

Sometimes "Hector", "Antor", or "Ectorius" and in older texts called "Cynyr Ceinfarfog" which means "nice beard"!

Sir Ector (sometimes “Hector”, “Antor”, or “Ectorius” and in older texts called “Cynyr Ceinfarfog” which means “nice beard”) was King Arthur’s foster father. He was mainly the one who took care of him. Sir Ector had his own son too. His name was Sir Kay. This is told in the Arthurian Legend.

After Arthur’s father Uther Pen-dragon early death, Merlin arranged that Arthur was put in the care of Sir Ector, without knowing its author. Ector did not know who he was protecting, taking the child on merely at the bequest of Merlin. Ector treated his young ward as his own son, and Arthur eventually served as Sir Kay’s squire.

One day a tournament was announced to be held in London. This was to decide who the next king would be. Ector joined the tournament with his son Kay, who had just been knighted. However, it was Arthur who drew the sword from the stone and convinces everyone that he was the rightful heir to the throne. It is told, that Kay tried to take credit for it. Luckily, Sir Ector saw through the lies and these two were the first to swear allegiance to the new King Arthur. It is also said, that Sir Ector and Sir Kay both remained loyal to King Arthur throughout his reign.

When Arthur drew Sword from Stone to convince him the rightful heir to the throne, Kay tried to take credit for it. Ector so through lies, and he and Kay were the first to swear allegiance to the new king. Both remained loyal to him throughout his reign.
