The Legend of Atlantis

Plato brought us the first account of the lost continent of Atlantis.

Over 11,000 years ago, an island nation existed.  Populated by a powerful and noble race,  Atlantis was located in the Atlantic Ocean.  It controlled the Atlantic Coast of Europe and a large part of the Mediterranean coast of Europe and Africa.  Atlantean sailors navigated the coasts of North Africa as well as North and Central America. (Aztecs, Mayans and Egyptians may have learned how to build pyramids from the people of Atlantis.)

Atlanteans could control geological events and the weather for their pleasure.  One of their favorites was volcanic fountains.

The people of Atlantis, a tall and fair skinned people, may have come from another planet over fifty thousand years ago.  Thanks to the natural resources of their island continent, Atlanteans possessed great wealth.  A center for commerce and trade, Atlantis dominated much of Europe and Africa.  Not all of the other nations of the time liked this situation.  The people of the Mediterranean formed a coalition with Ancient Athens to resist the expansion of Atlantis.

So, what happened to this great civilization?  Some believe that the extensive use of crystals led to a disaster that caused Atlantis to disappear.  Others think that the rising waters caused by the end of the last Ice Age resulted in the submergence of Atlantis.  The artifacts of this island nation now either rest at the bottom of the ocean or are lost forever.

Exactly where was Atlantis?  The most popular theories are the West Indies, Antarctica, Mexico or the Celtic Shelf.  Or maybe Atlantis did not exist.  In the 1960s, the ruins of buildings and roads were found off Bimini Island.  And Dr. Ray Brown discovered a pyramid on the ocean floor in 1970.  But the biggest discovery may have been in May, 2001.

Paula Zelitsky, an ocean engineer, was conducting sonar research in waters off Cuba when she imaged what could be a sunken city.  It was on the ocean floor about 2,200 feet deep.  Now, the National Geographic Society is investigating the site.  At the very least, this investigation will give us evidence of a lost, unknown culture.

At the very most, we may have found Atlantis.

Well written, I have always been interested in the legend of Atlantis. Call me crazy but I believe in Atlantis, I also believe in Lemuria. I was going to do an article on Atlantis but you covered it very well. I am researching Lemuria.
