The Legend of the White Lady

A White lady is a female ghost present in the mythologies of many different cultures all over the world. She has commonly lost or been betrayed by her husband, or was the victim of a sudden, tragic death. She generally appears in rural areas or beside highways.

Each culture has it’s own version of a White Lady, including:

America

  • The white lady of Arca – a woman who died on her wedding night and is rumoured to haunt a old dirt road

  • The white lady of Branch Brook park in Newark is reported to have been killed along with her husband on their wedding night in a car crash. Other stories say that she was in a car crash on the way to the prom and she is still searching for her prom date.

  • The white lady who haunts the Durand-Eastman park in New York is reported to be the ghost of a mother who’s daughter was kidnapped.

  • The Bridgeport inn in California is said to be haunted by the ghost of a woman who hung herself in room #19 after hearing about her husband’s death. She is seen wandering the halls in a white dress.

  • The lady in white haunts the Unitarian graveyard in Charleston searching for her husband who drowned in 1815.

  • Union cemetary in Conneticut is one of the most haunted locations in America, one of the most commonly seen apparitions is that of a Lady in White who has been seen since 1940.

  • The old faithful inn at Yellowstone national park is said to be haunted by a headless bride who descends from the clocktower every night at midnight then returns when she doesn’t find her husband who killed her.

  • In Santa Cruz, California there is a ghost who wanders the forests near the cemetary and is known by locals as the White Witch. According to the stories, she was killed by her husband on their wedding night. She apparently makes a lot of noise and approaches those nearby – she is reported to be dangerous.

  • One of the most ominous and popular White Lady myths is of the ghost haunting Clearview drive in Mukilteo, Washington. The lady in white may stand in front of approaching cars or try to hitchhike then disappear suddenly. There have also been reports of crying and screaming coming from the area, and of objects being thrown at passing cars. One Clearview resident has been quoted as saying “go down clearview drive half past 8pm. There ain’t no coming back she’ll find ya, she can smell your blood and fear.”

Great Britain

  • Castle Huntly in Scotland is reported to be haunted by a woman wearing long white robes. She threw herself from a high tower after her affair with a servant was discovered.

  • The white lady of Willow park haunts Merseyside in England after being drowned by her husband on their wedding night.

  • A white lady is often seen in Chadkirk in Manchester and is believed to be the spirit of a local girl who was kidnapped and hung by a group of local drunks as a joke.

Ireland

  • Charles fort (near Kinsale) is famously haunted by a White Lady. After her husband was accidentally shot after a case of mistaken identity, she threw herself from the battlements. Several offices have reported seeing her around the base and one said that he had been thrown down a flight of stairs by an unseen force.

Brazil

  • Called Dama Branca or Mulher de Branco in Portugese, the Lady in White appears as a young woman in a long dress and has generally died in childbirth or has been killed by a husband, brother or father in the name of honour.

White ladies are also present in the mythology of Germany, the Czech republic, Portugal and the Phillipines. A White Lady is also the main antagonist in the pilot episode of the series Supernatural.
