This is the End: 2012

by Ashli Arispe in Folklore, June 21, 2009

Briefly describes theories of events to come in 2012 and how some are reacting to it.

2012 is on its way (I am speaking literally rather than the upcoming release of the movie.) Three years away! Many await the end and some await a beginning. What are you waiting for? The Mayan long count calendar is to end on December 21, 2012. Many believe this to be the sign that this is the end, others look at it as the beginning of a new cycle and new era.

One of the theories regarding 2012 is the interception of Planet X with our solar system causing a shift in magnetic and crustal poles which will set off a series of natural disasters such as tsunamis, massive earthquakes, polar ice melting, and major flooding to say the least. Other theories state that a galactic alignment will occur, or that the ice caps will completely melt, WW3 will occur, or that the religious Apocalypse spoken about in the Bible will take place. Many prophets of the past such as Nostradamus have predicted this day. Configured numbers say that 2/3 of the world’s population will be wiped out. Wow!

Some people have quit their jobs and have taken their life savings to begin traveling and fulfill all the things they want to do before they die, others have begun saving dry foods and invest in fall out shelters, and others have just decided to quit paying bills and are dropping out of school etc. because they feel there is no point if this is the end. I do believe in being prepared, I don’t believe in the latter of dropping out of obligations-just in case this is a hoax, what will happen when nothing happens and you’re neck deep in debt?

Just remember Y2K, I know I do. My mother stocked up on 2 years worth of toilette paper, spam, and chlorinated water! Now whether this is to happen, I don’t know-I am not a psychic or prophet. What rings to my mind is the song by the Doors, This is the End. But, don’t give up on me yet- I think that whatever, if any route, you would like to take on this-do so, but these kinds of predictions reinstate what we should already be doing: living each day as if it were our last because it could be. We could die tomorrow or in 2012 or fifty years after. So this may be “the end” but it can be a beginning of awakening today for us to appreciate what we do have- another day.
