Understanding Dreams

by d crick in Folklore, February 13, 2009

If you are wondering what those weird dreams really mean, here is how to understand them.

Have you ever had a dream, and you woke up thinking, “What was that about?” Sometimes you have a scary dream or a nightmare. Sometimes you may just have a strange dream. Sometimes you might dream of a person you have not seen or even thought about in a while. What does it all mean? Are your dreams always what they seem? Or do they mean anything at all?

I have often wondered the same things. Then I recently began studying dreams, talking to the experts, and reading books on understanding your dreams. It was really fascinating! I thought I would share some of the things that I learned with you. If you have a dream, it is about you and what is happening in your life at that time.

A motel in a dream means that something is temporary.

If something or someone is being strangled or is choking, it does not mean that you are going to choke on your breakfast or that you are going to strangle someone! It simply means that you are wanting to hold back something, or that you do not want to tell someone something. Maybe you are hiding something from someone or you have a secret. Or maybe someone has said something that you wish they had of held in and not said.

Drugs in a dream usually mean that you are wanting to numb yourself from something. Maybe you were in a hurtful situation and you are trying to lose those harmful feelings.

Violent and hostile dreams mean that something negative is going on in your life.

Are there holes in the dream? Holes in a paper, on the ground, or in anything else could symbolize the holes in a relationship that need to be fixed.

If you dream about the backyard or if the dream takes place in the backyard, it is about something that you want to keep private. A back yard represents your private space.

A monkey in a dream represents not taking something or someone seriously. It is as if you are monkey-ing around!

If your teeth are falling out, you should have held something in. Something was said that shouldn’t have been. It represents loose speech.

Death in a dream does not mean that you are going to die. If you dream that your child is dieing, it does not mean that their life is in danger. Death represents change. Something in your life or your child’s life is going to either change or come to an end. Most people get scared when they dream about death, but it may actually be a good thing!

If a boyfriend, girlfriend or spouse is cheating in your dream, it may represent the time they are spending with something other than you. If they spend a lot of time working, golfing, or watching football it may come to you in a dream as if they are cheating. They are only cheating you of their time, and not necessarily with another person.

Birds in dreams represent freedom.

Dogs in dreams stand for loyalty.

If you have a dream about a bath tub or if you are in a bath tub, there is something that you want to come clean about. You are hiding something or holding something inside. There may be something that you want to cleanse out of your system. Maybe you want something in your life to change. There may be something you want out in the open.

Water could stand for your emotions.

If you are shopping in your dream, there is something that you want or need in your life. You are looking for something that you need. There is something that you want that you do not have in life.

A toilet in a dream represents something that you are wanting to let go. Maybe you are holding something in. Or maybe you just want to get something out in the open. You could be hiding something that you do not want to hide anymore. You might have an ex that you want to let go of the feelings you have for that person. Maybe you just want to be able to express yourself.

If you dream about yourself with your pants down, or naked you are exposing yourself. You have told someone something embarrassing about yourself. You have exposed your feelings or your emotions. You have revealed something about yourself that might be intimate or personal.

A basketball or a ball game could mean that the ball is in your court. There is a decision to be made, and you need to make the decision. There is something that is up to you.

If you are experiencing physical pain in your dream, or something is physically harming you, it could represent emotional pain in your life. Maybe someone hurt your feelings. Maybe you just lost a loved one. This emotional hurt that you are feeling could come to you in your dreams by someone beating you up or you are hurting physically. If you dream that your sister is in physical pain, that could mean that they are emotionally hurt or that you think you have said or done something to hurt her.

If things appear ugly in your dream, or if something is unattractive, there is something negative going on in your life. If you see someone more unattractive than what that person really is, this could represent the negative feelings that you have for that person.

Road construction or obstacles in dreams show that there is something in the way of what you want. There is not a clear path to the thing(s) you are going for. If it is a relationship, then it shows that you are working on getting the relationship to where it needs to be. Or it could mean that you need to be working on your relationship.

If you or someone is cooking something or bar-b-queing that represents that you are planning something.

If you dream of being in a relationship with a certain person or being intimate with someone, it does not mean that you are going to cheat on your spouse. You do not have to feel guilty about it! It could mean that you are longing for the certain qualities this person possesses. You may like this person’s sense of humor or charm.

So as you can see, if you have a really weird or strange dream, it may not be what it appears to be. I hope this article helps you make some sense out of your dreams. They can be very confusing. Many people wake up thinking, “Wow! What would make me dream of something like that?!” Or they become worried when something bad is happening in their dreams. Just step back, think of what happened in your dream, who was in the dream, and what is happening in your life at the time of the dream. And as always…..Sweet dreams!
