Unmasking Urban Legends: Facts You May Not Know About the Stories You’ve Heard

A new twist on an old favorite. Urban Legends are like the game of telephone, along the way the facts get sillier and more bizarre.

Over history, society has played with the idea of amazing phenomenons that they think is true. The only reason why we think this is because we have heard it so many times before.
I know we’d all like to believe that all of these mysteries are true and some of them are but, most legends are just stories that have been passed down from generation to generation.

It’s like that game we used to play when we were little called “telephone”. You would tell a friend a secret, they would tell their friend a secret and so on and so forth. The message gets jumbled up and along the way it just gets sillier.

Going to the tanning bed many times in a day will cook your organs.-False-There is absolutely no proof or published evidence that suggests that this is true. It is scientifically impossible to have your organs cooked from tanning. Tanning beds use ultraviolet rays that can severe sunburn. If they could cook your organs, they would use radiation and that is unethical.

Pop rocks and Soda mixed together can cause an explosion in your stomach.-False-Although evidence has proven that pop rocks and soda mixed together does cause a sort of expansion in your abdominal, it will not blow it up. You may experience an overwhelming amount of gas but, other than that, you’re safe.

Good one Lauren. It is kind of funny how serious some people get about folk lore. I have met some people that getting fighting mad about this stuff. I must admit… As a kid I bought the pop rocks gag too.

That pop rocks one seems to have managed to get all round the world. What about people being drugged and having one kidney removed and then waking up in a bath of ice. Pretty creepy but apparently all a myth. Cool piece Lauren.

Very good job. One thing though, under Lightening you put “a mist”, I think you meant “amiss”. Not to be nit-picky, just something to take a look at. Very entertaining!

I remember Pop rocks back in the late 70’s. My brothers and I were afraid to try the soda and Pop rocks together. We were told that Coke was the worst one to mix with Pop rocks.
The article and pictures were great. I thought that the Santa dying laughing was funny. Thank you for sharing.

Interesting article. The pictures were great. The details in the article captured the imagination. I learned so many things from this article that I never knew, like where you mention about spiders and bugs going into a person’s nose and ears and such. I also liked the bit about the lightening striking the woman twice when she was in her wheelchair and such. I was surprised when I read about her being able to walk as a result of getting struck by lightning, even if her walking was only temporary. Thanks for sharing a very informative article. I thoroughly enjoyed it. My work is published on Triond, under my pen name Joanna Maharis which is also my USER name.

The laughing one is what scares me because I’ve gotten to the point where I’m laughing so hard I actually can’t stop or breathe. It took a long time to calm down.

But apparently laughing also burns calories? So I think the weight-loss and the chance of death even out.

I’m curious what could that show be which the guy who died laughing was watching? I’m intrigued to watch it for myself and see if it’s really that funny :)

    Great share!
