Werewolf Facts and Myths Uncovered
A really informative article about the historical reality of the mythical (?) creature called the werewolf. Trivia about werewolves.
Are Werewolves Fantasy Creature or Reality?
When the moon is full it is said that the canine shape shifters prowl the night seeking new prey! Gypsies around the world tell folktales that warn about the anthropomorphic wolf-men (lycanthropes-Greek. derivation) cursed to endure a life of transmutation when the moon is full, becoming a predatory killer until the suns rises.
Are these half – human… half – wolf ‘monsters’ real, or are they a figment of our imagination, that people ages ago created to explain shadows in the night? Could these shape shifters actually exist? Perhaps Hollywood has instilled a false memory and predisposition for beings of the night, like vampires, zombies and werewolves. Maybe latent fear of the unknown drives the human mind to justify their fear of the dark by creating and believing in strange and bizarre creatures.
Then it may also be true—-werewolves may be more than mythical creatures in stories told by many people with roots that run deep in the old country of their origin. The gypsies may tell tales embellished by years of remembering, but based upon a truth shrouded in mystery and intrigue.
Common Beliefs About Werewolves
- The modern day name may come from the Old English “wer – wolf” [where ‘wer’ means ‘man’].
- Then again the name could come from the Norse legends about the ‘berserkers’, who were crazed warriors that dressed as wolves when they savagely raided and pillaged villages in the northern lands or Europe.
- One more good possibility could be it came from the word “warg-wolf”, another name of Norse origin which denotes a rogue or lone wolf type of character prone to stalk their prey before dealing the death blow.
- Were-wolves eyebrows come together and there is no skin space between them.
- It is said by some that they have “bristles” under their tongue.
- When they are in the wolf form they have no tail, keep their human eyes and can speak in human language, not just canine woofs and howls.
- When they shift into wolf mode they are said to have super strength and extremely sensitive senses….such as sight and scent.
- It is reported (Annales Medico-psychologiques) in Europe in the 1700’s that werewolves would dig up freshly buried corpses to eat.
- Scandinavian were-wolves were reported as being old women with poison claws that could paralyze children with their glaring eyes.
- The curse which transforms a person into a were-wolf is often seen as occurring from an evil allegiance or by being bit or scratched by one who is a were-wolf. It has also been deemed by many cultures as being a “divine punishment”. During the dark era of the Middle Ages the Catholic Church investigated excommunicated priests who were accused of becoming were-wolves!
- Taking an oath with Satan or powers of evil is usually the reported path to becoming a were-wolf and transformation from bites is rarely a recorded occurrence in historical writings.
- The fact that they can be killed by silver bullets is a modern movie generated folk factoid. All tales about were-wolves prior to the late 1800’s do not talk about silver as a protector from the creatures.
- Religious holy water or icons (such as a crucifix) do not keep them away.
- Items that will protect you from a were-wolf are garlands of fresh rye, mistletoe and garlic cloves.
- Some modern day researchers believe that were-wolves were real people afflicted with a medical condition called hypertrichosis. This is a hereditary disease that causes extreme hair growth all over the body, especially on the face and hands.

THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING…of searching out the truth and the fiction surrounding the centuries old legends about were-wolves. Are these furry creatures Real or are they Fantasy? You decide. But be aware, the more you dig the more interesting documentation concerning were-wolf attacks over the past 5 centuries you will uncover.

I am a werewolf. Not joking. Have to say, most of these ‘facts’ aren’t true. For one, most werewolves don’t consider being a werewolf a curse, it’s more like a gift. We don’t shift on the full moon, yeah, its kinda fun but we can shift on any other day as well. Mistletoe doesn’t bother me, or garlic, or rye. When we shift, we look just like normal wolves. You’re right about the silver bullets, they hurts normal humans as much as they hurts us. You don’t need protection, we don’t eat humans, most of us would rather eat lean meat that horrible fatty meat. Oh and by the way YES, WEREWOLVES DO USE THE INTERNET!

I’m a wolf too. I usually use the internet I was looking up ‘Werewolf facts’ to find out what humans know (or claim they know) I found some funny things to tell you the truth.
I confess ONCE I may have lost control of my anger, I had this anger problem when I was normal (I was bitten) and I may have given this guy a scar he recovered!! It was an accident I was only ment to give him a little scare!!

I\’m also a werewolf, though I hardly ever physically shift, I usually have a personality or sense shift. Quite useful since I don\’t really want to be seen in my werewolf form. I have never attacked a human, in wolf form or not, probably because humans don\’t actually smell that good. Ironic, yes? I do wish people would get something straight however; it\’s not as amazing being a werewolf as one might believe. It\’s painful and unpleasant at times, plus, it kind of makes me feel like a freak. Well, it is kinda flattering though that poeple think its cool…XD

Jane, you don\’t need to listen to what those other \’\'wolves\’\’ tell you, I have been around longer than they have, they are just cubs compared to me. Stay out of the way of normal people during your first five full moons. The first time you transform was painful, you will learn to deal with the pain. I am not quite like others, I am unique, the first of my kind, I am part vampire part werewolf part slog part kenjie and part vampuric. Born over two thousand years ago, I am known as the hybrid, my blood, and my bite is deadly to other immortals. What city do you live in? I can help you, if you tell me what city you live in, I can find you. I am here to help you, any questions just ask.

i’ve always wanted to speak to a werewolf so i can set aside facts from fiction and rumors. I believe 100% they exist. their just simply misunderstood, if they do hurt people they don’t mean it, some can’t control it. They do walk among us. People can’t prove that they don’t exist. so therefore they must. People need to take the time to at least TRY to understand you werewolves more. and I personally wouldn’t want to be a werewolf due to the fact i already have some paranormal gifts i guess you could call them that one of which i’m not proud of, and i would probably try to commit suicide if i ended up hurting or killing a loved one. I keep hearing the pain is the worst anyone can imagine. It honestly breaks my heart when people call werewolves monsters. Their just like us, just stronger, have fangs and fur.

Gods kill me now…Not that anyone is going to take me seriously nor do i expect most people to which is why im using a guest post. Its really annoying trying to find some actual and let me repeat that last word ACTUAL information on werewolves. This is what happens when something goes mainstream, you can no longer find the truth. Therefore im going to pointlessly attempt to get through to someone, one person would be good enough. Werewolves do exist. They are humans who shapeshift into wolves. You can only be born one (navajo indian for example sometimes carries the ability in the genes) or the ability can be transferred to a “normal” human by magick. The full moon does not cause a shift except maybe in the beginning. Silver does not kill a werewolf though I’d assume it would hurt because (need i even say)…its a bullet. The main reason you never hear any actual werewolf saying in person to someone they are a werewolf is because that person is going to simply mock you and think you are crazy. I couldn’t care less if anyone who reads this believes it, i’m not interested in attention grabbing nor do i want it. I will not respond to anything regarding this post because i’m not likely to come back to this site. Anyway take what i said or leave it, just hopefully society will be more sympathetic sometime in the future.

Hi, this is starting to get weird I get angry for no reason e.g. I start yelling at friends or family suddenly when they have not done anything, I have \’bristles\’ under my tounge and my friends have recently pointed out how big my pupils are. I have mostly blue around my pupils but they sometimes go greyish or greenish and I run low but on my toes and I can smell whats cooking without looking. My friends think my sharp teeth (I chipped one of them), sense of smell, pupils and hard, long nails are extreamly freaky LOL! I don\’t really belive in werewolves but my friend is asking me to post this \’coz they do(weirdo). So to make my friend happy here is the question. Am I some werewolf thing(I\’m expecting you to say no)? P.S never touched silver and I do think werewolves are cool even if they are not real. P.P.S I like werewolf movies apart from twilight(It sucks). P.P.P.S I thought garlic was for vampires/vampyres(which ever way you like to spell it), garlic smells funny and makes me feel ill. P.P.P.P.S Do you all have that thing that makes you crazy and think you are a wolf? ~The epicist, awesomest, coolist, most suprior and legendary practicly nocturnal completly normal person alive.

Hmph, How interesting. Werewolves online, not an odd thing I suppose but coming out fully or at least you say you are, is an act of madness all in it’s own. Not only are most of your accusations false, but it’s actually humorous you… Hmm, I don’t exactly know the word for things like you. you have no idea what Werewolves are exactly do you. Pathetic.
Any werewolf is smart enough to know not to reveal themselves, and I must say you are getting in something that is far over your head. To say your a child of the night, in front of complete strangers is… Mad would be the only word for it. Honestly children, go back to bed, and pray the werewolf hunters down put blessed bullets through your head.
