Wolf Totem Animal

by Raven Quill in Folklore, January 22, 2009

My interpretation of the wolf totem and what it represents.

Element: Earth

Key Concepts To Ponder: Loyalty, dedication, family, communication, the importance of a support system, eloquent communication, strategizing effectively, and a spiritual teacher.

Wolves have been misunderstood and used as a means of instilling fear and terror in others for a very long time. There have been several children’s stories written where the wolf is the “bad guy” and comes across as very ferocious and vindictive. The same is true of many movies that have been released. While these characteristics surface occasionally when defending the safety of the pack, generally such dark portrayals of wolf could not be further from the true meaning of such a sacred totem animal.

Wolves are very family oriented and incredibly close with their packs. They all share a very close bond and are incredibly loyal. Wolves would do anything for their family. All members of the group from the pack leader down to the new cubs, are treated with the utmost love and respect.

They are so in tune with other members of the group that they are able to communicate very effectively through eye contact, body language, movement, and even through vocal expression. These abilities hint that telepathy is another gift that wolf has tapped into for melding with the pack and communicating.

While family is incredibly important to wolves, they also understand the importance of spiritual quests that must be taken alone during certain cycles of the life path. The love, loyalty, and high self-esteem that the pack gives all members, gives wolf courage to separate from the group and experience necessary quests. These quests serve as a learning period for wolves and once they have successfully completed the lessons they are faced with, they can then teach their wisdom to others.

Messages:

If wolf has come into your life as a totem perhaps this is a good time to study the current support system in your life. Are the kindreds in your life that make up your family or pack a support system that you can depend on? Or are there certain members of your pack that continuously let you down and bring repeated negativity and harm to you? Releasing the energies and people that bring you harm will make room for new sacred teachers and kindreds to come into your life. Is it time for you to do some spring-cleaning and learn the true meaning of family support?

Are you having trouble communicating effectively? Having problems with creative expression? Have you been feeling lonely and wishing you had a new kindred or teacher in your life? Wolf is a great teacher who has much wisdom and experience to share with you. Welcome wolf into your life with an open heart and an open mind and you will be amazed at the wisdom, loyalty, and unconditional love you receive in return.
