A Letter to Future Generations

And I have to say that I, at least, am sorry. Some of us tried very hard but ultimately we have been too few and it’s just become too late. Humanity was warned what would happen if we continued on our path long before I was even born. We didn’t listen until it was too late and I fear that it’s going to be you who is either hit with the worst of it or left to pick up the pieces and futilely try to rebuild. I suppose I might be thankful that my time ended before we all hit rock bottom but that doesn’t help you at all. Then again, neither does my apology. I only ask that you please don’t hate us. Not all of us, at least. Maybe things could have been different if we weren’t outnumbered or if the people in charge cared more about the planet than stuffing their wallets. Maybe if the hippy generation had continued with idealism and took charge instead of fading away and leaving a legacy of useless stoners to carry their shreded flag.

There’s all kinds of things we might have done and probably more we could have done to screw things up. But we took the path we have and I’m very sorry that you are paying so dearly for what we’ve done. I don’t know if you’re my descendants of someone else’s. Either way I’m very sorry and I’m sure your past family didn’t want this for you. I’m sure no one is so blindly self-centred that they didn’t care what they were shaping the world into for their own bloodline. That just couldn’t be, could it? I’ll tell you what, if I ever get an answer from them I’ll write you another letter.

Until then, if that time ever comes, my future friend, I’m going to have to say good-bye. I hope you don’t suffer too much because of us. I’m sorry and good luck.
