Help for Our Older Youth

It will not be long now.  They will be offered a special entry program we old codgers were not privileged to be offered.  I blame it on our parents, and think you will agree.

America, we should all be proud, and I know many of us are. Proud of our teenagers, our young adults. Sure, we say such things about all of the generations who follow but this is an incredible group. I for one am very proud they have made it through most of their really trying time, early teenage years, almost, at least most through their highest level of intelligence, and again most through the many trying years of learning, school. Soon now, very soon they will be able to take over from we old codgers who have messed up things for them far into the future. Just think about it, access to the latest and best technology on earth, best of foods, and fast at that, able to communicate at the flip of a cover, actually see what Flash Gordon could only fake, gadgets tied to every ear, others gadgets, surely antennas poked into every conceivable part of their body, why they are communication genus. And we who had to cringe while watching them master PC’s, Nantendos, and the like, to confront every frontier encountered among their strange and weird peers coming out unscaffed ready for the work ahead.

Now I am not talking about the ultimate, mature and courageous military personnel, all volunteers of today. These are the cream of the crop, so to speak, and I have absolutely nothing but respect and pride for them. This article is about those others who one day may achieve commander in chief of the military. Those that see the federal government meeting all their needs, insisting that each and every American share the wealth, whether they have learned to work or not, whether they work or not. Surely, this age group will have a better twist on things, that work is for those who do not understand the system, or can learn the system. I had one of this type ask me while I was in the placement business of finding people jobs.

I ask what he could do. Anything was his answer. That is not what his application noted but silly me, I thought I would not hold him back, if he said he could do anything, so be it. The first I sent for an interview in hope of employment to this beautiful hospital. The new administrator was searching for brain surgeons, so hey, I had one for him. He returned to my office disgusted with the system. The administrator said he lacked knowledge, skills and ability for the job. That was not the truth, he may have had all those, what he lacked was training and education. So it turned out he could not do anything.
