Looking Towards the Future Through Our Developing Awareness

by Stacey T Pollock in Future, March 23, 2009

What does the future hold for us when it comes to the potential of technology and the opening up of our awareness?

It is no doubt that we are now living in the technology age, just through seeing the level of new technology that is coming into the forefront within weeks and months instead of within years.  We no longer need to create a means in order to formulate upon our ideas, all the platforms are there already.  We only have to dream of possibilities and then make these things come true, through our own intelligence and abilities.

Our technology becomes also more complex as we develop our ideas, built upon old experiences in order to form new ones.  We also develop ideas through creativity and totally new approaches.  These approaches not only cement a strong foundation for a future that is based on intelligence and awareness, but also bring about a more confident and positive future, paved in comfort and security.

When we look at the past ten years, we discover a totally new area of the mind to which we have been internally confronted with.  This is the confrontation of our fears, of the unknown, as well as the potentials of things that extend outside of ourselves that we have no control over.  These things include such things as weather changes, and global cataclysms, sickness epidemics, and environmental destruction.  We realize that there can be many challenges that we will face that extend far bigger than our own understanding of these issues in our current position in time.  There are things that are far bigger than us and can only be confronted through gradual awareness and the understanding of how we ourselves impact on life individually, and also how the environment impacts on us.

What is forgotten is that we are still learning and developing, and that no one has all the answers on how to fix all the issues at hand in the present.  We first have to be aware of the problems before we can even reason how to find a solution.  Earlier to this period of time we had no care to even look at such complex thought processes that extend into topics that do not just concentrate on singular everyday life experiences and simple survival factors.  We did not even bother to look so deep into the possibility of life beyond our world, or even care to comprehend the complexity of the universe.  It is in the last fourty years, and especially in the last ten that we are now starting to see a speeding up of intelligence and awareness that is changing not only our world, but also how we live within it.

Looking back over the last century it is clear to see that development is two fold and that it builds upon itself, speeding up in its potential.  The world is becoming globally aware, especially since the introduction of the internet, making it easier for people to know about things going on all over the world.  Just over a hundred years earlier you would have had to post a letter that would go by boat and take several weeks to arrive.  Before this time one would only wait for their love one to come home to them, waiting perhaps years and months, wondering if they were still alive.  Now we can massage someone within seconds, pushing away at the small buttons on our mobile phone with the speed of thought that we take for granted as being normal.

If we would take such an object as a mobile phone to a person back in our past of a hundred years ago they would not even be able to comprehend how such technology works, let alone type with such finger speed and accuracy to send messages within a matter of seconds.

I remember even back to when the microwave was first introduced and we had to cook everything on the stove.  The microwave can cook in a matter of a couple of minutes what the stove can do in ten or twenty minutes.  Even then after a couple of years, it seemed as if the microwave was moving slow.  I would be standing by it telling it to hurry up and cook what I want in a minute.  One minute seems too long a moment to wait, whereas in my past I could easy sit for hours watching the clock ticking away.  Time seemed to move slower, but mentally I was slower, and did not linger with my thoughts into such complexity as I do now in my life today.

Mental thought has taken on a new level of development, with our brains taking on more complexity and ability.  Our brains are developing with our technology and awareness, able to harness far more complex notions than previously thought possible.  Just by comparing what a person would have learnt at school a hundred years earlier to what they learn today, only emphasizes what I mean here.  There are far more subjects and complex notions for children to take in now than previously needed in the times from the past.  They now need to learn how to think faster in order to induce much more information effectively.  It is no surprise that computer games are taken on by many children as they are growing up, increasing their speed of thought to be able to handle this new fast paced lifestyle, that interfaces with computers and technology.

Just look at the speed that a person can now type up their thoughts, rather than having to write everything down with a pen on paper.  When I was younger computers were only just being introduced into schools.  I remember that I began to learn how to type on an old manual typewriter and anyone who has also had to do this would remember how hard it was to press those keys with the small fingers, that you had to develop muscles even in your fingers in order to use it properly.

Then we were introduced to electric typewriters before we tinkered with computers and the earlier programs.  I remember I used to have a commodore 64 that I would write small little text related programs on.  There is no way that I could have imagined how it would be today, seeing the complexity of computers now.

Everyone from the same time will remember also that we used to carry around these portable radios that were huge in comparison to the walkmans of today.  I thought that the walkman was such fantastic technology at the time, able to play cassettes without needing huge batteries or having to be plugged into the wall socket.  I could never have imagined, at the time, life without a cassette or record player, let alone having once used such technology as reel to reel.

I never used reel to reel in my time, but I was shown this technology as a child, and thought of it as being almost prehistoric.  To me spending so much time setting up such technology made me laugh, when in that time I had all I needed on my small walkman, utilizing a small cassette tape that I could rewind and forward easily.

If only I could see then what I see now, then I would be amazed if looking at the blue ray disc and its capacity of 25 gigabytes of memory.  In that time I would not even have known what a gigabyte was.

Technology since then has developed at such a high speed that I still could not comprehend the possibilities that will present themselves in the future.   Most things are created out of need and gradually there will be things produced that focus on bettering our lifestyle in different ways.

In the past we did not even know of certain things to be able to reason how to fix our current problems and issues.  We did not even comprehend the impact of environmental issues, let alone be able to understand the impact of global warming, and what natural disasters would come to mean.  These things were only ever considered isolated cases that were never as readily documented as they are today.   We were not in contact with other parts of the world in the ways that we are today.  Earlier we cared little about some small island of the coast of some far away continent and its small population, whereas today we have technology all over the world that keeps us up-to-date with all the news even in such isolated places.

Awareness is the key to developing our intelligence when it comes to technology and the future.  The more we develop intellectually, the greater the information we can take in, which can be utilized to enhance our lives even more into the future.  One example of this might be our need to develop faster technology for travel.  Perhaps it the future we will have a super fast tunnel based shuttle train system able to travel to such speeds as 8000 km/h.  Could you imagine such technology now as being possible?  Such technology would not only allow people to travel places easier but also open up our possibilities of more things that we can do in our social time.  Instead of traveling to a place on holidays and having to take hours to get there, we might head there for shopping and to have lunch, able to return home the same day.

Our technology and awareness of global issues might entice us to develop housing that can better give us comfort all year round.  Maybe in our future we will never have to face again the impact of weather changes and seasons.  We might produce enclosed environments that allowing the inhabitants to enjoy a level temperature all year round.  These inhabitants would travel underground and might only face certain environment and weather conditions when they chose themselves to go out on a study excursion or for a hike.  They might find it more an adventure activity to go out into the environment and feel what it is like to have strong winds and to feel the coldness of the snow against the body.  Maybe in the future there might be people who never know what feeling cold and hot is.  They might have body suits that regulate the body to a perfect temperature and comfort.

One thing that a lot of people do not take into consideration is the loss of old technology in the future.  What if we had no longer the need to utilize the wheel in any sort of device and that all things could float along without the need to move them along on the ground.  It is certainly an odd thought to think that technology could be lost with the advent of new technology that overtakes it.  Look at how many years it took us to develop the concept of the wheel to be in the future never needed to be utilized ever again.

I had a dream recently where I was watching two young children playing with a toy.  This toy was just hovering up in the air on its own accord being controlled through a small little device held in the palm of one of the child’s hands.  The toy made no real noise and just hovered as if it was floating in space, like it was so light being carried along by the wind.  It was made of some hard type plastic like what you see on the outside of light reflectors.  They called this floating toy in my dream an angel toy, meaning that it could float as in the concept of how we see spirits or angels that can glide along without any physical means that are apparent to the eyes.  Looking at the toy it was not evident of how it was able to float along on its own.  Such technology would certainly change the face of the future and how we could travel the world.

I also had a dream last week where I was in a small egg shaped floating device, pulled along by the same means as the toy.  It hovered in the air and could support two people in it.  It took only minutes to travel from one place to another.  I was enjoying the comfort of getting around in this device, and remember that it felt so light and made not a noise.  It was almost as if I was floating as a ghost over the tree tops, like I was not even there.  Such devices would certainly change our ability to travel and see the world in the future.

The future holds so much potential and possibility, especially as we develop intellectually it can bring about much more than we can even imagine through our current level of perception.  In many ways it is exciting to think about it, how much we are going to see within the coming twenty years or so, compared to now.  It is a good time to be in this world compared to 100 to 200 years earlier.  I am glad to be living in this time, and to see the world change daily before my eyes, constantly amazed and awed by all that I see, and excited by all that is possible.  The future holds so much potential, especially now with the advent of the technology age.

Looking back from the Stone Age, we’ve developed far apart. Technology has indeed brought us convenience and leisure life, but in the name of TECHNOLOGY, human has ruined the earth and the balance of nature.

Who knows, it might be in the name of technology that we begin to care for the earth again? Lets hope! They are now in the midst of trying to find new ways to work in with the environment better.
