Robots and the Future

Is it possible to create a humanoid robot that has a soul and emotions?

Whatever he was doing to this woman was influencing her thoughts and she was in some other place, like she was drugged, and he proceeded to complete his work.  He was transferring some sort of information to her into her spine, via some sort of electrical charge and chemical transference.  I noticed after a short time that when she was to walk out of this toilet building, she went back to her normal state unaware what had happened to her.  She had no recollection of any events having taken place.

What this dream shows is the possibility of synthetic or robotic beings influencing over our body, which can be utilized for all sorts of horrible things, especially when it comes to warfare and secretive investigations.  These beings were able to influence over a person physically, disconnecting their link to their own mind for short periods of time, taking over the body as if they were puppeteers.

This dream only emphasizes even more the possibility such technology can produce and how it can impact our lives, ethically, emotionally and physically.  If such a thing could be created it would not only limit our free will but it would also take away the experience of life for us, changing the face of our stored memories and physical actions.

This sort of technology would never come to any good and it would only ever be used in warfare, to infiltrate places without being noticed.  To do illegal experiments without people remembering what took place.  There is no ethics at all involved if technology were to ever get to this level, to be able to affect our whole physical experience, manipulating even the way in which we experience life.

These might just be dreams, however they really emphasis the importance to think through technology and its implications.  Ninety-nine percent of people would never want to see technology to reach to these levels of application, especially if it meant the destruction of their whole reality.

What could then ever be the purpose to create a humanoid robot otherwise?  They could never take the place of a human.  Never show love that was not programmed or systematic in its approach.  They could never feel or experience things from the core of creation, and would be empty always without a soul or purpose for their own life.  Their purpose would be our own doing, their drive would be programmed by our own hands; their life always lived to do our bidding, forever a tool to manipulate with.

Yes a computer is an appendix that we can use to better our life.  It is an attachment to our own nature to broaden our own experiences.  An appliance is something that can help us with tasks, a machine something that gives us more free time for other physical things.  Technology should be used to better our experience, and not lead to our detriment in the end.

Is it possible to create a humanoid robot that has a soul and can feel with emotions…no.

Is it possible to create a robot that looks human that can do things for us in a systematic fashion…yes.

Is it possible for a human to create technology that is destructive in nature…most certainly yes!

Is it beneficial in the long term for us to create such technology that can harm us…most definitely not if we hope to continue in our physical experience!

Things always start out with an innocent notion, a robot at a technology festival that moves and talks is a spectacle to see.  It is what such technology leads to on a manipulative level that it then becomes no longer an enhancer of our lives, hindering us rather than creating more possibility.

Let us hope that these dreams remain as dreams, and that they do not become our reality.

So to your point that machines can never have souls, I agree and am glad for it. I think machines with a sense of self are a very scary prospect, as it would not take them long to figure out they are better than us (ever see I, Robot?).
Anyway, the sad reality is that no matter who comes up with a technology, the military always ends up with their hands on it, so you can count on it being used for evil.
I think the purpose of a humanoid robot is not at all practical; some say giving robots faces makes them more personable, but I think it’s just to prove it can be done.
Let’s hope robots don’t take over any more important jobs (did you read about the robot teacher in Japan?), or we’re really heading for trouble!

Yes, I agree, they will start to take over certain jobs, that can be just as easily done by any human. Then people get used to them being around, as if they are normal, then they become first our teachers, than our nannies, our cleaners, they will cook for us, serve us and be seen as something we cannot live without…when in all truth we can live without these things. We are just as capable as any robot to perform in life, and do the tasks that are needed to survive, otherwise we would not be where we are now today.

INTERESTING THOUGHTS.BUT THE SCARIEST TECHNOLOGY TO ME IS CLONING TECHNOLOGY. THIS IS ACTUAL LIFE BEING CREATED AND HOW LONG WILL IT BE BEFORE SOMEONE TRIES TO IMPROVE THE HUMAN RACE WITH SUPER STRENGTH OR HIGHER BRAIN CAPACITY. MACHINES AT LEAST CAN BE CONTROLLED, BUT CLONES ARE A WHOLE NOTHER STORY.

Of course, robot has taken of almost human’s tasks. But I think, they cannot completely replace the ROLE of human. They shall never have soul and feeling as humans.

    Great piece!

I agree with Chan here. Although the thought of a robot being able to take on ordinary tasks would be interesting, there would be a downside of the lack of emotion

Yes, exactly! They would be a walking souless machine, and nothing more. Emotion and personality goes far deeper than just systematic computer programming.

Your article reminds me of a science fiction story I read many years ago. I don’t remember the title or the author but it was about an astronaut who was sent to another planet. A female robot was made to go with him who looked and behaved exactly like a real woman. He fell in love with the robot. Anyway it was an interesting story that really made me think. I have read many books since then and only remember a handful, but this story stuck in my mind.
I think it was the fact that we can know something is not real and still can feel it is.

Nice article. You might find my novel, Animals Are Automata, interesting: it discusses what might happen in a future where artificial humans are created, particularly related to their role in fulfilling sexual desire.
