Argentinean parliament on Thursday voted to legalize gay marriage, a new law also provides that same sex couples can adopt children.
Question homosexual marriages split the Argentine society, where over 90 percent of the population considered Catholics.
The Senate, after 14 hours of debate, with only 6 votes differences passed a bill allowing marriage between same sex. The vote was broadcast live on television, while waiting in front of parliament gathered supporters of gay marriage.
Maria Rachid, president of the Association of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, said that in the midst of a “historic day for Argentina and all of Latin America.”
“We have a lot to celebrate – this is a very important step forward in the struggle for human rights. We are the first Latin American country to recognize the equality between the sexes,” she said.
