Bisexual Becomes The Next Thing!

by seb222 in Gay & Lesbians, August 20, 2009

In this essay I am looking to voice a few thoughts and reserch into the idea that being bisexual is “cool”.

To start with, i am not anti bisexual or homophobic in anyway but i am however intrigued by the youth and the fact that in many instances being bi is cool and increases popularity.

There are many factors as to why i think someone would say that are ‘bi’ to be popular.

  • To get with girls as it makes them believe you are relaxed and in touch with your femininity.
  • So that that they can get in with a crowd that normally would have rejected them.
  • In some cases to clear the idea that you may be homophobic.

Of course you might have picked up on the fact that i am referring to the youth and high schools in particular.

My first hand evidence is the fact that i am in highschool, and recently a group of people, all part of the same ‘gang’ became bi and then after that, all previous animosity towards gays in our highchool was abolished and it became cool.

Of course possible one of those people was actually bi and it just so happened he was popular enough to voice out and tell people thus making it a FAD if you like.I personally think it is not so much wrong but mislead for people to do this to:

a) gain popularity or b) to pick up girls but i think the non fake Bi people will fade out in the next year or 2.

I think there may be one other reason for declaring yourself as bi in high schools, and that is to break the ice of being gay. If you are gay it is much easier to say you are bi as it means there is little disputes with people over the correct choice and you can always brush people off by saying ‘ yeah but i really mostly like girl’s.

Lastly, i think there is an element of media glamorisation, for example the Britney and  Aguilera kiss, making lesbians glamorous. In the 90’s there was a surge of guys liking lesbian pornography for mixed sex appeal and i feel this could have something to do with the whole glamour aspect of being bisexual.

Please leave comments regarding your though on the matter and let me know if this is the case in your area.

Guys Liking lesbians has nothing to do with glamor it has to do with a whole bunch of nakedness and no penis to ruin the mood. I can’t see someone declaring themselves bi just to join a clique but I suppose it could happen. There is probably just one or two extremely strong personalities that happen to be gay and they are influencing some other students into accepting their lifestyle. I doubt any heterosexual male is going to delve too deeply into bisexuality unless there is a very hot girl involved and she and the gay individual rope him into a sexual escapade.

While there should ideally be enough enlightenment and fairness around to provide for the acceptance of those who experience a difference in their orientation, nevertheless, there are ethics to consider while interacting with others and the truth about oneself is an ethical consideration. Does one forego being ethical for any unjust reason ?
