Gay Marriage: When Will the Debate End?
Questions on the issue of legalizing gay marriage in all fifty states.
The argument is that marriage is an institution held between a man and a woman versus marraige is an institution held between 2 people. There are at least 4 states that signed the bill for the approval of gay marriage. While this may be a good thing, it seems that most of our elected head government officials would argue for the former. Could the approval of same sex marriage in the states that do allow it be an evolutionary jump in humanity – that all humans are created equal? Or is evolution moving too slow in only allowing very few states to recognize gay marriages as sacred unions?
Some would say we have aligned this movement with the movement of racial equality – in wantiing to tear down the walls of prejudice, not only against race, but also against creed, color, sex and national origin. Audrey Lord, a black, lesbian feminist, has attended lots of feminists rallies and couples her fight for women’s rights with the fight for equal rights for all gays and lesbians. Her theories can easily be applied to mordern events in injustice. So women’s rights must play a part as well, in the never ending battle against injustice; and gay marriage is only next in line to reclalibrate the scales. Maybe, just maybe this is a true measurement as to how far we’ve come on the issue of equality as it wades in and out of different genres.
5 out of 5 heterosexual males I’ve interviewed – in a group setting – say current trends of anti-homosexual rhetoric and legislature are direct descendants of racism and laws of the Post Civil War era; that outdated terms such as “gay marriage” or “same sex marriage” should be changed to “marriage equality”. History has shown that global acceptance does change with the changing of your own personal thought process. But is America, or the world even, ready for global acceptance of gay marriage? Should same sex couples who have been together for twenty plus years automatically receive the full benefits as heterosexual partners in marriage? Should a same sex couple even be concerned with wanting equal rights in marriage from a government that does not fully approve of such a union? Decades after debating different points on this subject, we still continue to debate. Hopefully these probing questions have prompted different answers that will eventually help resolve such a long standing issue.
