How Legalizing Gay Marriage Can Benefit Society
Gay marriage or civil unions should be legalized for several reasons, and I will prove ways that it could benefit society overall.
I am a lesbian and presently living in a monogamous relationship myself. My partner and I would like the same rights as heterosexual married couples. Yes this includes the right to claim each other for tax purpose whether it goes for or against us, the right to own a home together, the right to share insurance polices together, to right to make decision regarding each others health, and more important the right to share our lives together. My partner and I have acquired belongings together, yet if there was a break up between the two of us, who will say this is hers or that, is mine; We have no laws to protect us if this was to happen. Meaning if the house is in my name then she has no rights regardless that she has paid into the house for the time that the two of us were together
In 1996 a movie titled “If These Walls Could Talk” was based on a few scenarios regarding lesbian relationships and the one scenario that stands out foremost in my mind took place in the 60’s. This particular segment is in reference to an older lesbian couple where one of them dies and the other is left with nothing. The nephew of the one that died unexpectedly came into the home and decided it would be best to sell it. The home that the woman left behind had worked hard to pay for and made memories in as well only this woman had no laws to protect her because she could not have her name on the dead thus leaving the other woman without her home. Is this fair? For those that choose to live in a homosexual relationship and to be happy, that being the meaning of gay; they have no rights as a couple.
Only the political figures and the religious fanatics of today seem more concerned about whether gays and lesbians can marry or how much it is against God. Religious fanatics believe that homosexuality is an abomination to God, one of the reasons for stating this is because it is claimed that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for the reason of homosexual activity yet in Ezekiel 16:48 – 50, God States clearly that he destroyed Sodom’s sins because of their pride, their excess of food, while the poor and needy suffered, worshipped many idols; sexual activity is not once mentioned. Furthermore, no where in the scriptures does it state that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for homosexual acts. In Luke 10:12, Jesus claims the sin was hospitality to strangers and this, would be in reference to rape not homosexuality. Leviticus 18:22 states, “Thou shall not lie with mankind as with womankind; it is an abomination.”

This article was rather misleading. Only a small portion actually talked about how legalizing gay marriage could benefit society. The majority of the article detailed the discrimination that homosexuals deal with during the course of their lives. This is a serious issue, but it does not belong in this article. Because it takes up such a large portion of the article, it overshadows the point and dramatically weakens the argument. It is obvious that very little research was done, as you have only one source for the information that actually pertains to the topic. Also, there were many grammar and spelling issues. These issues may seem mundane and inconsequential, but an improperly written sentence can confuse the reader, obstruct the flow of the article, and in worst-case scenario, make the reader second-guess the authority the author has on the subject. Please understand that this is not an attack on anything pertaining to the GLBT community. That would be hypocritical of me since I am gay myself. This is simply a critique of the article itself and its efficiency to convey your purpose.
