Prop 8- My View
A short article about rights and equality.
I’m sure just like me alot of you have been following along with the Prop 8 story. With so many controversial points of view on the subject, from equality to morality, I’m sure the discussions and bickering over the subject matter will not be ending any time soon. I myself am a heterosexual, but I do believe in the rights of all people to be treated fairly and equality no matter, gender, religion or lifestyle choices.
This country was founded around those very beliefs. The pursuit of happiness for all men, without fear of persecutionor unfair treatment by the law. I’ve read the arguments that “gays” tend to change partners much more frequently than heterosexual couples do. As I do not know if this is actually true or not, I do say do a little research on the rise of divorce and infidelity over the last fifty years. Gay or straight we all seem to deal with the same struggles within the relationship it’s self, so why should only one group be able to fully embrace the stages of relationships? I’ve read the religious points of view as well. While I’m not an overly religious person, it is my understanding that most religions believe in not judging others, as that will be handled by a higher authority after this life is over.
I believe we should concentrate more on being compassionate, understanding humans. We should embrace the differences as well as the commonalities of our neighbors. We should learn from those who have different histories, different perspectives than those that we have had, we should discuss our differences in the hopes of learning more about each other and developing a deeper understanding of all of humankind. Ignorance is not an incurable disease, it is easy to cure with education, understanding and an open mind.
