A Man is Coming to Your House

Tomorrow a man is coming to your home. He’s going to knock on your door and invite himself in and you’re not going to be able to do anything about it. He’s going to smile charismatically and introduce himself to you. You’ll notice he’s wearing a nice designer suit and has the kind of smile that costs a million dollars. He’s going to sit down and talk to you. First he’s going to say that you’re living on his land. Your house is on the land he owns and if you’re going to live there you have to give him money. But this man isn’t your land lord and he’s not from the bank where you got your lone to buy the house.

Next he says that this isn’t an option and if you refuse then he’s going to send some people around to see you. They’ll be fit, strong people that work for this man in the suit and they’ll have guns and if you don’t give him money then he’s going send these people and you’ll face a punishment of his choosing. That’s now the law of the land and you don’t have a choice in it.

You think you could try calling for help but he’s one step tells you that everyone on your street and in your town is living on his land too and they’re paying him money too and if they try to help you with anything then they get a visit from the people with guns too.

There’s nothing you can do. You’ve got to give him your money and do whatever else he tells you. Are there benefits to it? Of course there are. By doing what he tells you he promises to stop someone else from coming to your house in a nice suit and inviting themselves in and doing exactly what he’s doing now. It’s a big favour to you and all you have to do is give him how ever much money he wants without any fuss. You go along with it because you’re afraid and powerless to stop him and his people.

Who is this man? Why does he think he can do this? What sort of criminal; what sort of Mafia boss does this? Well it’s a funny parallel you draw but I can hardly say it’s inaccurate. He’s a the head of a mob and he goes by several titles. He’s not godfather but sometimes he’s prime minister and sometimes he’s president. He used to be king but he doesn’t use that name much any more because people don’t like it.

This man is from the government. The only difference between him and a mob boss is that he’s got even more power to take your money and tell you what to do. The only difference between his enforcers and a gangster brute is that his police have a uniform. But the biggest difference between the government and the Mafia doing this is you. When the man comes in and calls himself government you seem to think it’s alright for him to impose on you.
