A New Reality
The slide-down of our economy should be considered as an accurate indicator that government by the people, for the people and of the people, is subject to changing circumstances, from time to time.
New decades call for new governmental reforms, regardless of which party is in power. In this respect, partisanship must not take precedence over the national interests of the people of the United States. The affairs of certain sectors of governmernt must necessarily be controlled by government because of demographic considerations and global upheavals, affecting our economy, as well as the vulnarability of the private sector to the whims of unscrupulous individuals in whom the confidence of the public has been irrevocably shaken, because of greed and self-aggrandizement.
The time-tested failure of deregulation in sectors, such as healthcare, finance and housing (including rentals of apartments) has, in fact, accelerated the need for governmental reform, which, in turn, should have the potential of successfully turning around our battered economy, when the essential needs of the public are met. This is not to say that nationalization of all sectors of government is, in any way, warranted. Society, in general, must retain the free will to enjoy the freedom of profiting from our democratic system of free enterprise in sectors from which government should keep its distance.
The possibility of succumbing to the temptation of violating the principles incorporated in documents of trust could not be overlooked. It is time that an overhaul of certain aspects of our democracy should be taken into consideration. Like it or not, periodically, time and circumstances change, and with it, the need to remodel parts of the structure of government, while its foundation remains firm and unshakable.
The days of bypassing the needs of our society, under the prerogative of those that are entrenched in the belief that manipulations and procrastinations should continue to set priorities of self-interest, are over. Unlike previously, it has become glaringly apparent that our present society holds the key to opening new vistas in governmental affairs. It is time to wake up to the fact that the picture of a new political and economic landscape has begun to present itself, on which the promising touches of light replace dismal shades and shadows of pessimism.
