America’s Role in Terrorism
This article describes how America’s actions during the last century has lead to acts of terrorisms against the United States.
The United States and its allies have been under the attack of what they call “terrorists” for decades now. Many people are blind to the fact that the United States and its allies are not completely innocent. The United States and its allies have a bad reputation in the eyes of many people in the international community for their actions in some areas and their lack of actions in other areas. A lot of people in the international community see the United States as a terrorist under their own definition of the word. Although justice generally takes the form of revenge, in order for the United States to be just in the face of terrorism, the U.S. must respond with understanding and a willingness to do what is right. This means that American politicians must start understanding why “terrorists” hate the United States and its allies, then do something about changing that. This paper will have five sections; America’s military presence around the world, American’s lack of intervention in certain crises, American imperialism, America’s hypocrisy, and suggestions to decrease the amount of terrorism against the United States and its allies.
American Military Presence Around the World
The Pentagon’s 2003 fiscal report shows that the United States has 702 military bases overseas in 130 different countries (Johnson, ¶ 4). The number of bases is expanding, especially in the Middle East and in Eastern Europe (Johnson, ¶ 14). Many people see this as the United States’ way of expanding its borders around the world without actually being an empire. Although, the governments of the other countries allow it, not all of their constituents agree with the idea. This resentment towards both the United States and the governments that allowed the United States to build a base on their nations land. A logical minded person might ask him or herself, “Would the United States allow another country to build military bases on American land?” The answer is obviously no because that would add an increased risk of attack on American soil.
The most obvious presence of American militaries around the world is found during wartime. One of the most devastating acts of war in world history was the dropping of atomic bombs on Japan during World War II. So far this has been the only use of nuclear weaponry against another nation and it was the United States that did it. The death toll was about 200,000 citizens, most of whom were civilians. The pain and hardships of the events were not only immediate, but also long lasting.
