Citizens Should Have an Input in Government Decisions
Citizens are not ignorant about the way government works, yet we are blocked out of making suggestions, or providing ideas to better the services of government.
When government decisions are made by only those in authority, we lose much wisdom in finding solutions to our problems. When political authorities and heads of public establishments such as schools, and welfare, make decisions, they are more based on their assumptions of what will work, than on how those who live by the decisions feel.
Who better to know what needs to be done, than those who live in the situations that the authorities can only imagine? People who are put into authoritative positions, believe that they are all knowing and have all the answers. They are paid comfortable salaries to make such decisions, so they become self trusting, and resent citizens giving them any advice or ideas on how to do something better.
The government officials want to get credit for everything, no matter if they fail a dozen times before getting it right. Having a lowly citizen come up with a better solution than they have, insults their so called intelligence.
There use to be factories and companies that had suggestion boxes for employees to drop in ideas, or suggestions, to better the work place. Money rewards were paid for any ideas or suggestions that were used. Who better to know what problems are occurring in a factory or work place, than those who work there and see it first hand? Just because a boss or person with a business degree is in charge of making these decisions, doesn’t make them an expert in everything.
As adults we often think we know more than a child. Then something comes up that we can not figure out, and
a child will come along with a simple solution without even knowing, he or she solved your problem. You shake your head and say, “Darn, why didn’t I think of that?”
People who work for the government all think they are above the intelligence of the average citizen. Their egos refuse to allow them to accept a suggestion from those they are paid to oversee. It is ironic how we are always told that government is “For the people, BY the people,” yet, government officials fail to consider that citizens could possibly be as smart as they are.
They fear that if citizens show them up too many times, they may loose their nice cushy job. Heaven forbid if a common, or poor citizen were to make a public official look bad. If common citizens had input that was considered seriously by government officials, maybe there would not be so much government waste in trying something a dozen times, and failing at the cost of taxpayers.

Your concern is right. You are entitled to know what is going on in a company or a government. In India, realising this, the Right to Information Act has been enacted, according to which any one is entitled to know what is happening in a particular department or the relevant information that he seeks. But in a democracy having got the right to elect a representative government, you can get information only through proper channel and according to law. Thanks for sharing.

So true, it seems even a citizen who starts out with only good intentions losses prospective when placed in the position of power for to long. I agree, business, government, education it’s all the same.

Government exists for the protection and developement of its citizens.
Unscrupulous and bulldozing collectives, corporations, governments bully or bamboozle citizens into believing its the other way around.
Usually, calamity ensues.

The peoples have to be more and more vigilant and not fall asleep on what was gained in the past. Things are moving so fast…and not always in the right direction!
Thank you for this excellent article.

this makes sense, but there is an organization I know that as if giving its workers a chance to ask questions but afterwards, the one who asked would be called by higher authorities questioning why asking such question…this is absurd!
anyway, you have presented here a very significant story that must be considered in a way even to the smallest existing organization.
thanks for sharing this.
