Conservatives Want a Government That Stinks
The very thing that makes society work are its people. When we look for politicians to make things right we are looking for failure to succeed.
Who invented cardboard? Oh I could look it up but the point is that the invention probably did more for the economy then all presidents of the United States put together. Now if you were to take all the neat things that are useful in our lives and try to figure out what the world would look like without these things we would probably imagine a place like Cuba where they drive cars from the 1950’s. I’m sure they use cardboard there, after all they have cars, but what they don’t have is a government that makes their lives better. If someone in Cuba were to come up with an invention with the stature of cardboard he wouldn’t be able to garner the funding for his idea because the banks or venture capitalist don’t exist. Cuba is a snapshot of a time when someone said lets make things fair for all, not better, just fair. Everyone is equal and the state knows what is better for all in a 1950’s world. As long as the people like living in the 50’s forever.
Okay so that’s the basic difference between liberty and socialism. Sure there are some out there who still believe in socialism because they love the poor hate the rich and want to level the playing field. It’s not economics and if it isn’t economics then it also isn’t liberty and freedom. Politicians flirt with the idea of “universal” health care and reason that places such as Cuba (could you believe it) and Canada are great health care providers. The awful truth in the matter is that whatever comes out of this universal stuff is a system where our politicians know more about an industry than the thousands of people who are in it making millions of decisions every day. Could one decision be the best one because the one making it has an office in Washington DC?
Rearranging society takes a sense of what isn’t so much as right and wrong but what is fair for all. That is the true opium of the populous, the idea that someone in power somehow has an idea of how the economic deck chairs could be arranged. It ignores the wisdom of a vast majority of people who could try and fail then learn. When it is government run mandates it is try and fail but keep in place anyway because the alternative is someone somewhere will fall short and we all have to be equally misarable because at least we’re equal.
That these arguments have to be made in this late date only underscores the ability of the political class to manipulate the lowest instincts of the population. So what if executives got bonuses, if its a bad idea then the business should suffer and go under, oh I forgot, they’re not allowed to. It’s another failure that we have to live with. What people need to understand is that government is not something we look to in order to make our lives better. With constant campaigns for office from local, state and national this is hard to do. The conservative paradox is that we want politicians who perform in a way that suggest that all they did all day was get out of the way and if there was something to do they didn’t bother doing it. Conservatives want a government that doesn’t work and its very hard to find the right politician who can do that. Its not that politicians are do-nothings, they’re do too much-ers.
