Fears of The New Constitution in Early America
What political leaders feared would come of the new Constitution following the Articles of Confederation.
One reason that leaders feared the new plan after the Articles of Confederation was they feared that representation in Congress would favor big or small states. Another reason they feared the new plan was that individual states would lose their sovereignty under the new Constitution, which they though would lead to a too powerful national government. To solve the fear of representation in Congress the Connecticut Compromise was made. This allowed the creating of a bicameral legislature with one house based on population and the other with each state getting equal representation. This allowed for neither the big or small states to be favored and allowed them to be equal. To solve the fear of states losing their sovereignty a compromise was made in the Constitution. States did give up their sovereignty to the national government, but states were also guaranteed rights over the national government. This allowed the national government to be in control, while the states could check the national government and weren’t completely reliant on the national government. That is what the political leaders feared and how those fears were solved.
