Fixing the Electoral College
The current system of electing the United States president needs to be changed. Currently, the people’s vote in each state is only an advisement to the electors of that state. The electors of a state get to make the final decision and vote for the president that they want. The candidate that gets the most electors in a state to vote for them gets all of that state’s electoral votes. With our current system, the people’s vote doesn’t even matter in the election. The electors are the only people who hold the power to vote for the president. The only check that the people have upon the electors is that they elect the electors. If the people don’t agree with the elector’s vote, then the people just won’t reelect that elector. This to me, is an extremely weak check. That means that if the elector didn’t want to run again, then that elector could choose whoever he wanted for president and we wouldn’t be able to change the vote at all. This system could lead into a takeover of the United States government with just a few well placed terrorists or communists. These are just some of the many reasons why our current system needs to be improved upon.
I feel that a state’s vote should be separated into districts and that each of those districts should have one electoral vote (the district plan). The person running for president that the people vote for the most should win the vote of that district and gain one of that state’s electoral votes. We should get rid of the electors and the people in each district should get to decide who will be president. The presidential candidate who receives the most electoral votes should win the election for presidency. If there is a tie with two or more representatives having the same amount of electoral votes for them, then the popular vote should be taken into account and the candidate (out of those who tied) with the highest amount of Americans who voted for them should win the election.
This system would allow for many different ideas (or new party’s) to have a chance of winning or at least impacting the election. This system will allow more third parties to gain votes and begin (after time) to have equal representation along with the democratic and republican parties. This would allow the American people more choices in voting along with allowing them more options in the ideas and beliefs of their leaders. This system may even help to nullify party’s and cause them to lose some of the massive amount of power that they currently have in both shaping our rulers and dictating who is eligible to be the commander in chief and president of the United States of America. This not only is what I believe our founding fathers would have wanted, but this is also a far better way to secure our freedom in the United States of America (the land of the free and the home of the brave).
To put this plan into action there are several different steps that I would need to follow. First of all, I would need to go to congress (or become of age and become a congressman myself) and propose the bill to a hand full of the congressmen and representatives in both the House and the Senate. Then I could go to the president (or the president’s secretary) and ask for his good word to be put in with the bill (like a letter of recommendation) and ask him to approve the bill once it’s passed. After patiently waiting for progress, either the bill will be passed or it was killed in the process. If the bill was killed, I would create a wide scale petition and website for others to submit and sign the petition all over America. Once I obtained enough signatures, I would again go to congress and hope for better results when I have so many people backing my ideas.
