Are you having FNU as your frist name?
Are you facing issues getting your Drivers license through DMV because your first name in the passport and / or first name in visa is given as FNU? There are a lot of people who are facing similar issue because they have the abbreviation FNU given in their first name in US visa. People face several issues because of having FNU in the place of your first name and your full name in Given names. Majority of this issue is seen for people who are getting a US visa from India. If this is not corrected early enough, it can lead to several inconveniences, loss of time and money. In this article i try to give my personal experience with this issue and how I was able to resolve the FNU issue.
What is FNU?
FNU stands for First Name Unknown. This usually happens when the officer processing your visa application cannot determine your first name and last name from the information you provided in the application form. In an Indian passport there are two fields for your name. The first is the “First name” and then there is the “Given names”. When a situation described above happens, the officer will put FNU as your first name and the Given name will be filled with your actual Full name (First name + middle name + last name).
What is in FNU name?
So you might ask, what is the big deal in that? Your full name is anyways recorded. But when you come to US, the first hurdle you face is in the immigration portal where you fill your I-94 form. If you fill your first name and last name properly in that form and get away with that you will now have contradictory information in your passport/visa and your I-94 form. In the passport you will be having FNU but in I-94 there will not be any FNU.
Issues of having FNU as your first name
In US there are two things which are indispensable. The first is your social security number (SSN) and the second is your drivers license (DL). If your Visa has got the name FNU somewhere in the system, then you might face an issue while getting either the SSN or DL. Most people get away with the SSN registration and get their name recorded in the social security card without FNU. But when you go to get a driver’s license that is when the real problem starts. The person in the counter who will review your application will ask for your passport as proof. Then he will enter the details in their screen with FNU as first name and your full name as last name. This is for verifying your details with the SSN office. But they will not get anything from the SSN office because your name is not registered like that. (The other situation is if you have registered FNU as your first name in SSN office also. In that case your name will be like that for your entire stay in the US). The person at DMV who is reviewing your driver’s license (DL) application will tell you that there is a difference in what is there in the visa and the SSN record and that you need to change your name to “FNU + Given names”. Trust me this is not an easy process and you will spend a hell lot of time to correct this. You might have to go back to SSN office and ask them to change the name.
