Government Regulation on Automobile MPG
I personally think that the government should in fact regulate MPG on automobiles. While this may and most likely will cause problems, I believe the pros much outweigh the cons.
Lastly there is the argument that building more efficient cars would cost a lot and therefore make the price to buy them very high. I completely resent and disagree with this. The only reason things cost the way they do is because someone wants to make more money than is necessary. If dealers teamed up with makers of the cars and engines, more than likely a deal could be made before the government has to step in. Also, the cars that actually get good mileage, and cost a lot are hybrids. If we made an engine that was purely gasoline based, most likely the price would not be as high as even the hybrids today. So obviously that argument is incorrect.
One very interesting argument posed was that if we went for better gas mileage, cars would in turn have to be made lighter, and that would be unsafe. 1st of all, the new hybrid these days are the ones being made lighter to get better gas mileage, ranging up to an estimated 78 per gallon if u take out almost all the practicality of the car. It seems when people think better gas mileage, they think hybrid, and look at what’s going on in that aspect to make their arguments. However, there are many more different ways of making a car get more mileage. All that is required is a little work at it. If the government regulated mileage and announce ahead of time, just to be nice, car makers would be forced to find new better ways to increase gas mileage, like newer more current engines. Safety should never be compromised to save a few dollars (hundreds of millions nationwide) and will not have to, even when getting better gas mileage.
Overall, the government should in fact regulate gas mileage. The industry would be forced to cooperate, and much good would come out of it. We would finally start to show some technological advance in that area, and the whole nation, including automobile makers and dealers would be happier off in the long run. The effect of the gas saved would be remarkable, and the environment would be better off. Lastly, with less gas being used, the situation of having none left, will at least be held off for some years to come, till we find alternative fuel…also hopefully regulated to prevent a monopoly. That is why government should regulate mpg on automobiles.

You are forgetting the one important point here that it is a business. Government regulation is good for some things but consumer regulation will ultimately be the best determining factor for these manufacturers. How “Greedy” a business man is has no real relevance because we as consumers decide, vote, and support the manufacturers with our money. If we wanted a better product we would demand it with our purchasing power. More Government or government regulation is not what we need.
