Government Scams

Government scams against its citizens have been going on ever since there have been governments. This is the first in a series of revelations about some fairly recent scams, starting with the famous "gas shortage" of 1973. Probably
30 per cent of today’s population was not even alive then but for those of us who were, the nightmares still linger.

The prelude to this event began in 1972 at a series of meetings between big oil company executives, ministers of OPEC Nations and officials of the United States Government.

The purpose: How to bring the price of gasoline in line with inflation and the price of other commodities without creating a world-wide uproar.

The solution: Create an artificial gas shortage and drag it out until exasperated citizens would be willing to buy gas at almost any price.

And that was exactly what happened.

At the time I was living in Wilmington, North Carolina right across from the gas terminal on the Cape Fear River and many times I  saw tanker ships slip in to the terminal in the dead of night and unload their cargo of gas into the waiting tanks.

The tanks stayed full ninety per cent of the time and one night I overheard a ship-to-shore conversation to the effect that a tanker had been laying off the coast for two days and wanted to know when he would be able to unload his ship. The respose was wait two more days and if there is still not room, take it out to sea and dump it. All this while Americans were waiting and fuming in mile long gas lines at service stations.

Sure enough, when they got the price of gas where they wanted it, there was magically more than enough gas for everybody.
