Indian Government Partner Mamata Threatens to Quit
Mamata Benerji’s Trinamool Congress is a partner in the coalition government of UPA in India. Irked by the increase in petroleum prices, she has threatened to quit.
New Delhi, Nov 4: Mamata Benerji, Chief Minister of West Bengal, whose Trinamool Congress is a partner in the UPA government, has threatened to quit. She said she cannot keep on forgiving the government for all its follies. She was opposing the fresh hike in the price of petrol. She said if the UPA government headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh did not mend its ways, she would have to quit. She said she was unable to explain the petrol price hike for the eleventh time in this year.
She said a delegation of her party would meet the prime minister as soon as he comes back from the foreign tour and have a discussion about the ways of the Congress-led UPA government.
She said such increase of petroleum prices for eleven times in 12 months had burdened the common man and was not acceptable to her. Stating she knew that domestic prices would depend on prices abroad, she has complained that prices in India were not being decreased when prices decrease abroad. She said the government could be taking her party lightly because it has only one representative in the central government. She said she would also make the Congress quit her government in West Bengal as her party had majority and did not need Congress support.
