Influential Americans Attempting to Keep Gadaffi in Power
The US has played a key role in removing Muammar Gadaffi’s rule over Libya. But there are those within the US attempting to keep him in power.
Within the bombed ruins of what was once Qaddafi’s headquarters, Libyan fighters who took over Tripoli found documents linking prominent US citizens to Qaddafi’s reign. Despite his anti-American rhetoric, it seems Qaddafi has had a lot of aid in staying in power from Americans, namely David Welch. David Welch was the former assistant Secretary of State. He now works for Bechtel, a multimillion American company specializing in construction in the Middle East. Welch met with Qaddafi’s team and advised him how to win a propaganda war and to undermine Libya’s rebel movement, including potential assistance from foreign intelligence agencies, mainly from Israel. Within the documents, the following statement is found…
“Any information relating to Al-Qaeda and or other terrorist extremist organisations should be found and given to the American administration but only via the intelligence agencies of either Israel, Egypt, Morocco or Jordan. America will listen to them… It is better to receive this information as if it originated from those countries”
Welch also advised the Qaddafi regime to take advantage of the unrest in Syria, pointing out…
“the importance of taking advantage of of the Syrian situation particularly regarding the double-standard policy adopted by Washington… the Syrians were never your friends and you would lose nothing from exploiting the situation there in order to embarrass the West.”
Welch also suggested a solution that would supposedly please everyone in the White House. Instead of being outright removed, Gadaffi should “step aside”, a clear contradiction to the White House’s demands. As the meeting closed, Welch “promised to convey everything to the American administration, the congress and other influential figures.”
