Jefferson’s Self-Evident Truths

The “self-evident” truths Jefferson presented were, “That all men are created equal,” and we are given, “unalienable rights,” such as, “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”.

The “self-evident” truths Jefferson presented were, “That all men are created equal,” and we are given, “unalienable rights,” such as, “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” (Pg. 492)  Jefferson’s self-evident truths were related to his arguments because he wants his country to be independent from the King of Great Britain and free from the injuries the King has caused Jefferson’s nation.  A part of his argument is when a government takes away people’s rights of “Life, Liberty and pursuit of Happiness,” (Pg. 492) Jefferson said the people have the right to abolish that government and set up a new government that would establish their “safety and happiness.” (Pg. 493)   The King of Great Britain took away the rights of the people in the American colonies, and caused repeated injuries by doing such things as “imposing taxes,” (Pg. 494) and sending soldiers to enforce the British rules.  Jefferson said Americans have the right to be independent, and that is why he wrote “The Declaration of Independence” to the King.

I consider Jefferson’s truths to be self-evident because man does not need proof to believe he has rights given to him by his creator.  “That all men are created equal,” and possess the right to “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
