Local Government Chief Executive or Sheikh?

A complaint that we have grossly overpaid managers in the public sector of Britain whose skills are of very poor quality.

We are used to seeing leaders and dictators of oil and mineral rich countries become multi-millionaires. We are even used to seeing leaders and dictators of poor countries appropriating their country’s money to become multi-millionaires. The principle that those running a country should responsibly manage the finances of government has been breached to a considerable degree.

In the UK this principle is being breached by Chief Executives and other senior executives of Local Councils although to a much lesser degree. Nonetheless the principle has been breached.

There exists a body created to set pay and conditions and employ people for these positions. The people who run this body are people who expect to get those positions.

Thus salaries are inflated and people take it in turns to get senior jobs. The claim is that the money must be paid to attract high calibre candidates but the candidates only come from within Local Government. None of these people would command such salaries in the private sector. Most are paid more than the Prime Minister yet the evidence is that their positions are largely symbolic and mainly redundant.

How did we get to this state in Britain? We now have a legion of poor quality employees in senior posts throughout the public sector. We have never had so much expensively paid management and yet are so inadequately managed.
