Obstruction to Progress

Progress, development.

I still can’t figure out why some political lame ducks choose the road to perdition instead of success. These flimflam individuals, hungry for recognition and distinction, will not stop at anything to forestall development because they are never contented with what we have. Take, for example, the Integrated Bus Terminal project that is about to get off the ground. Scornful at it, the disparaging critics satirically sneer at it because it will eventually become a landmark and their names won’t be carved on the cornerstone. They call it an expensive endeavor which may lead to an ombudsman complaint against the implementors – in this case, the mayor of Latin City. The purveyors of development hasten to disagree because they know it is a step toward decongestion and expansion.

It is said that the greatest harm you can do unto the envious is to do well. Go ahead with the project, Mr. Mayor. The people have everything to gain from the expansion of the city towards the east coast where in the next five years we shall, with the help of funding agencies and the national government, have a new international airport that will surely be the envy of all. Bear in mind that “talkative people say many things in company which they deplore when alone.” Why? They need to do so to attract attention no matter unfavorable.

Yes, Mannix Dalipe, the city government will open new roads, arteries and roadways in cooperation with the City Council to lighten the load of traffic within the city limits. Yes, Charlie Mariano, the city will have a third congressional district in the near future – after the people shall have been properly consulted and after the demarcation lines shall have been drawn. Yes, Kim Elago, more resettlement sites will rise to give comfort to the poorest among the poor. Yes, Rudy Lim, school houses will be built to give our pupils and students the roof they need to make education more conducive. But, first, we must increase our income so that these ideals could be realized. Yes, we must put our resources together to get things done.
The opposition should not grapple, but concur, with our leaders, make peace with each other and, together, walk the path to glory. Zamboanga will never be great unless we all live in harmony. This grievous rent among politicians and lame ducks must come to a stop, for we look up to them for our children’s future. Stop this obstruction to progress.
