Russian authorities plan a vast reform of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (ODKB) in order to transform this structure in the main instrument for peacekeeping, designed to ensure order during the conflicts in former Soviet republics. One of the central missions of ODKB, which brings together Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Armenia, will focus on developing partnership relations with NATO, writes Kommersant .
The publication found that the issue of reforming the organization will be raised by President Dmitry Medvedev traditional political forum in Yaroslavl.Institute modern development, one of the authors reorganization plan, said that ODKB must become the main peacekeeping force in Central Asian countries and neighboring regions. Among other things, the organization must monitor and warn about potential conflicts able to endanger regional security. In the future, the model UN oepratiuni ODKB could participate in peace beyond its area of responsibility and influence them tense situations through special envoys. Experts believe that NATO would welcome transformations announced in ODKB amid delicate situation in Afghanistan.
