The Significance of The Attack on The Punjab Regimental Centre at Mardan
by The Punjab Regimental centre at Mardan was attacked by a suicide bomber, causing innumerable casualities. This is potent warning to the Pak Army.
The Punjab Regiments of the Pakistan Army are the oldest regiments in the Pakistan Army.They have a checkered record and have a long and distinguished history. After Independence in 1947, the Punjab Regiments with Moslem elements were Incorporated in the Pakistan Army. The Punjab regiments recruit men from Punjab and constitute over 50% strength of the Pakistan Army.
The Regimental centre of the Punjab regiments is at Mardan in the NW Frontier of Pakistan. It appears that a few days back a young boy wearing a school uniform of a local school was able to gain entry into the parade square of the Centre and detonated a set of explosives. this was sometime in the morning when the centre was bristling with activity and young recruits were parading in the square.
The result is disastrous and tens of Punjabi soldiers have died. The suicide bombing raises several questions. Firstly it shows that the terrorists have access to the military areas at their will and secondly it shows that now the Al Qaeda and Taliban are target ting the Pakistan Army itself. The fact that they have targeted the elite training centre of the Punjabi’s, is not a healthy sign and the Pakistan General staff needs to wake up.
For long the Pakistan Army has had a one point plan and line of action-India. Their entire policy is based on India being their main enemy. This is no longer true and the Pakistan Army must now confront the danger in their own backyard. general Kayani and his cohorts have their work cut out.Will they see the writing on the wall ?
