What are the Real Differences Between Liberals and Conservatives
I’ve tried to find a conservative to help me write this but I couldn’t. It seems none of the ones that I know want to broadcast their beliefs, for what ever reason. Some of what I say may sound accusatory and that is not my intent. I come from a far left perspective and in that believe that all positions share some sort valuable insight, even those that are opposite of my own. Using a few sources on the internet, I have compiled a list of things that both sides think about themselves and about each other and have saught to break through the rhetoric and understand the arguements for and against each issue.
- Political correctness
This is incorrect as well. We believe in responsibility and we believe you should respect the people around you and be aware of how words can be hurtful but we do not want to force you to be behave in any certain way. I do not use words like Faggot or Retarded because they are hurtful, not because they have been determinded politically incorrect.
- Support of labor unions
Yes, we support the right to organize so that a corporation can not take advantage of its employees and this has helped create safety and stability for the working class.
- Teaching acceptance of promiscuity through sexual education rather than teaching abstinence from sex.
This is entirely true except that it is false. We do not believe in teaching the acceptance of promiscuity. We believe in teaching responsiblity and safety. We want people to understand the consequences of their actions and to know how to protect themselves. Abstinence is the only way to prevent pregnancy with one hundred percent accuracy but people are sexual beings and there are ways to protect our children and give them much needed information that will help them make more responsible choices. We believe fully in teaching children to remain abstinate but we also believe in preparing them for the world.
- A Living Constitution that is reinterpreted as liberals prefer, rather than how it was intended
I think this is written with a lot of rhetoric. We do believe in a living constitution which we believe should be interpeted as time goes on because each generation brings new technologies and new perspective to the world. The constitution was written to be interpeted by the people who live under it, whether conservative or liberal.
- Environmentalism
Because it has been proven that our actions can either aid or harm the planet we live on, we believe in treating the earth responsibly. It is a living thing and deserves to be cared for. Even if global warming were a myth we would want to leave the best possible earth, with the most possible resources, to our children.
- Disarmament treaties
Entirely a myth. We want to fix treaties and work with the governments of the world to create a better society, one that benifits us all.
- Opposition to an interventionalist American foreign policy [4]
Also on the list was globalism and I don’t see how these two things are different. We want to help other nations but we do not want to be the police of the world.
- Reinstating the Fairness Doctrine
We do support this because many news sources manipulate the truth and broadcast from a perspective of their own beliefs and lead the viewers to only hear one side of the arguements and tons of rhetoric. Liberals believe that the more information you have the better off you are. Even this article is an example of that belief. The fairness doctrine enables you to make up your own mind.
- In 2005, it was reported by CBS News that liberals were the most likely supporters of the theory of evolution. The theory of evolution is a key component of atheistic ideologies in the Western World.
Liberals do acknowledge evolutionism and are more likely to because it doesn’t compete against preimposed religious beliefs.
- Opposition to domestic wire-tapping as authorized in the Patriot Act
Liberals believe that civil liberties are important and one of those is the right to privacy. Again, conservatives talk about a “big government” but liberals are the ones that want the government to be the least involved in their personal lives. Wire tapping did not make us any more safe and violated the rights of American citizens.
- Calling anyone they agree with a “professor” regardless of whether he earned that distinction based on a real peer review of his work (see, e.g., Richard Dawkins and Barack Obama).
I have never called someone a professor that was not an actual professor. This one is completely fictional and I can not even understand where the root of it came from. We do acknowledge that some people are extremely bright and we honor that intelligence but we don’t give people undeserved titles.
Both of these lists came from a conservative website and I really encourage you to ad your own perspective, please share your knowledge and your position so that people can see the breadth of the ideaologies.
