10 Best Inventions of the Ancient Chinese
What amazing things the Chinese have come up with!
Paper currency:

Paper currency was first introduced by the Chinese, and is now used widely in most countries. The earliest documentation of this invention is in the 800 BC.
Row crops:

Crops were first planted in rows around sixth century BC, which allows them to grow faster and larger. In addition, the wind will hit the perfectly straight rows and roll gently through.
Deep drilling for gas:

A technique developed in 100 BC is still used today, known as deep drilling for gas. The devices that were used were remarkably large and well crafted for the time. This technique has given many Americans jobs in the past and present, and is responsible for a considerable amount of America’s income.
Fireworks:

Fireworks were invented by the Chinese as entertainment, but were later used to scare off enemies in times of war. Today, we use fireworks to celebrate our independence. It is cool that this seventeenth century BC technique is still practiced and enjoyed today.
Gun powder:

Gun powder wasn’t designed first for war uses, but as elixir for immortality. Unfortunately for the Chinese, the only thing that gun powder did was explode. The invention of this made wars less gruesome and painful. Instead of dying slowly by a fatal sword wound, a shot takes toll immediately. Imagine, an America where all the soldiers bear swords… Gun powder’s date is unknown, but it is assumed that it was invented around the same time as fireworks.
Flame thrower:

What pyromaniac nut invented this contraption!?! Invented in the tenth century BC, the flame thrower was a great invention that has a variation used widely today. A torch or welder (following the same basic principles of a flame thrower) is used to weld metals together, and is very important in building large sturdy structures.
Parachute:

Nothing like jumping off high objects, huh? I guess even the Chinese had to get their kicks somehow. The invention of the parachute is used widely today, both for recreational, and government uses. When important and sensitive satellites are entering the orbit, they are in a freefall, but once they get to a certain point they deploy a sturdy parachute to allow them to drift to the ground harmlessly. First documentation of the parachute was in 90 BC, but it is assumed to be around in second century BC.
Rudder:

The rudder helps with turning a boat or in recent years, a plane. Before the invention of the rudder, boats had to rely on oars to turn, which required a lot of unnecessary time and energy. Now, planes (which cannot be steered by oar) are possible, and are used widely for both recreational and work. It is unknown when the rudder was invented.
The wheelbarrow:

What would life be without the wheelbarrow? When working, you could carry 200+ of weight in a wheelbarrow, while you could only carry half of that. The Chinese’s building process was dramatically sped up because of this useful invention. The wheelbarrow emerged in first century BC.
Compass:

The compass is one of the most useful inventions by the Chinese, used widely in planes, boats, and in the wilderness to find direction. Many times when you lose your bearings, just consult the compass and you’re on your way. Invention date is unknown.

I have to question some of these.
1. What would ancient chinese have been drilling for in 100BC, the date seem ludicrous for drilling, I can’t image what they would have used for drill bits or the shaft to turn thre bit that deep.
2. row crops, since fields of crops leave no archeological evidence, who can say if they had row crops in ancient mesopotamia or egypt or some other agricultural civilization
3. Rudder, if it is unknown when the rudder was invented then how do we know it was the chinese?

It has been said that the Chinese came to America before Columbus. In some of Columbus’ journals, he makes reference to natives wearing fine silk garments that could have only come from China.
The Chinese also invented Zhang Zhi Yi. I’d like to take a bite out of that cake. Tai piaoliang le!

Palatkwapi, the process of deep drilling was for water as well as oil, but why they needed oil I can’t say. As for the time it took, they spent several YEARS to drill. (would really stink if you missed eh?)
Okay, for number two, row crops have evidence toward the origination in China, mainly art. But, there are documents (though very fuzzy) that say this technique originated here.
For the third one, I honestly don’t know…
Hope this helped!

The Chinese didn’t invent paper money. Rather, Mongols implemented paper money while they occupied China. Kubilakhan is the man responsible for that. In fact… the Mongols gave China China (they were the first to actually unite China). Kubilakhan was more Chinese than the Chinese.

The Taiwanese and Tibetans have a right to autonomy. Did the Chinese invent enslavement? Does Dance or lurkerman use spell check ever? It is spelled “Parliament.” The Chinese government of today is not representative of the high culture obtained in the past. They are taking China in the wrong direction.

Of course Taiwan and Tibet have the right to autonomy, so do Ireland and Puerto Rico. The reason of wanting to be united is always about economics. China wants to be strong, while U.S. don’t want that to happen. Aren’t they selfish bastards? The spelling master must also know that U.S. are too busy trying to be the representative of the current high culture, by economically enslaving those developing nations and imposing every values and standards they invented to others. Don’t ever talk about human rights or what is right, if your country became rich by killing and enslavement. So sick of someone’s out-of-nowhere superiority.

The earliest documentation of paper currency was at the very end of the 8th Century CE or the beginning of the 9th Century. This “flying money,” as it was called, were really checks. Real paper money that was backed by cash was invented around the early 10th Century CE, and the first instance where banks issues notes occurred in the early 11th Century CE, but the government took over paper money issuing in 1023 (Temple, “The Genius of China”, 117)

Fireworks:
Seventeenth Century BCE? What’s the evidence for this? I thought that even rudimentary fireworks (without gunpowder which wasn’t invented until the 9th Century CE), which consists of throwing bamboo into a fire. Real fireworks are believed to have been invented in the 10th Century CE. (Temple 232)

If we leave a country alone he get bamed and if we do somthing to help we get bamed also. And its not our faught Chin for example are dependent on us, its the the best way to make MONEY. If America isults themselves from the rest of the world then nothing would happen for a while. We are connected by every one, we just dont see people eating babies here- thats why cruse went to another country damn scientogists. In all, people may not like it get but were not perfect read US history and see what i mean – if high schools were any good here half the polation would be either npatroics or monster because of our histroy.

They were drilling for salt in the inner regions far from the seas. Maybe it is beyond the scope of your education but everyone else know that salt is essential for the human body to function healthily.
row crops in ancient mesopotamia or egypt or some other agricultural civilisations earlier maybe. But it is not up to you to decide who was first you know? It is probably documented in chinese documents and not in any of those civilisations you mentioned. Maybe you invented Windows XP a year than Bill but didn’t document it… so when Bill registered his patents you can’t do squats about it. Same about the rudder I would say. Why don’t you zip on down to the nearest patent office and register the patent for the rudder I say.
@Popeonabomb
Ah yet another wise guy. I figure the historical records about the collapse of government reforms in the late Sung dynasty( the dynasty that the Mongol defeated) due to inflation as a result of reckless printing of paper money to pay for the reforms is a big fat lie just to claim credit for inventing paper money eh? And the picture provided by this website of the Sung paper money is probably something the website owner made using photoshop eh?

this is an interesting little article because it makes the reader think about your choices and then wonder, “what would be my top choices?” for my money, i would value the inventions of paper and printing over the wheelbarrow and fireworks. i think us digital folk forget about that technology and assume it’s going obsolete. but it isn’t. congratulations on an informative, provocative piece.

The Ancient Chinese are awesome! I mean, they invented the seismograph, matches, flame-thrower, gun-powder, fire works, noodles! What else can we ask from them? Plus-the seismograph is very important today. It’s very important to us today, especially in California. Anyways, if they didn’t invent the Seismograph, we wouldn’t be able to find out if an earthquake was going to happen, until it happened!

this i all very interesting but you neglected to mention that the people of ancient china invented the seismograph. I am a year seven student and I am astonished at the lack of proper grammar, knowlage
and research shown in these vague descriptions of inventions that MIGHT have bee made in china. How am I to believe that these inventions originated in china if the dates of them
aren’t shown?!
if you haven’t read this i shall not merely assume that you are impervious to all comments, but rather that you abandoned your inaccurate source of information that hasn’t been proved long ago.

A lot of the inventions attributed to the Ancient Chinese are actually Ancient African inventions. However, all fairness, Ancient Chinese people were African. So technically speaking the Ancient Chinese did invent all of this stuff as it was invented by their ancestors.
For the non-believers:
Research the Shang Dynasty. This was the oldest and longest lasting dynasty in all of China.

The article’s timelines are way off.
Oil drilling in China dates to 11th century CE/AD, not 100 BC.
Paper dates to 200 BCE, and paper money dates 10th century CE – NOT 800 BCE.
The flamethrower was invented in the 10th century CE/AD, not 10th century BCE.

I was always told that the Chinese invented the 4 most important things in human history: Paper for money, trade and written history and literature; gun powder for warfare; the compass for travel, trade and colonization and I can never remember the 4th. None of the top-10 ring a bell here though. But is probably the wheel barrow for architecture and agricultural purposes…. oh well.

The first poster posted this:
“1. What would ancient chinese have been drilling for in 100BC, the date seem ludicrous for drilling, I can’t image what they would have used for drill bits or the shaft to turn thre bit that deep.”
The Han Dynasty (202 BC – 220 AD) Chinese drilled huge boreholes into the earth in order to extract liquid brine that could be boiled to make salt. They used towering derricks to lift the brine and bamboo pipelines to transport natural gas to the furnaces where evaporation pans were filled with the extracted brine. There is ample written and pictorial evidence of this from China, from several different books and depicted on a dozen or so carved reliefs on tomb bricks from the time period. This practice wasn’t limited to the Han Dynasty either; it was employed in subsequent dynasties.
“2. row crops, since fields of crops leave no archeological evidence, who can say if they had row crops in ancient mesopotamia or egypt or some other agricultural civilization”
They planted crops placed in neatly defined rows due to the fact that they mounted mutliple-tube seed drills onto their ploughs, which inserted the seeds deep into the soil so biological pests and birds could not disturb them.
“3. Rudder, if it is unknown when the rudder was invented then how do we know it was the chinese?”
Your basing this off a false assumption from this website. The oldest pottery models of miniature ships showing rudders date to the Han Dynasty (202 BC – 220 AD), excavated since the 1950s. Joseph Needham, Robert Temple, K.S. Tom, and a number of other scholars discuss this. Please, before you ask questions, do a little homework. It wouldn’t hurt.

to drakal the great wall of china was invented not to keep the mongols out but to keep their horses out, without them, the mongols were just a bunch of men. Then the ancient chinese could easily defeat them. Except the guards were really lazy.So the mongols got through.

White people invented more than the chinese in the last 800 years. Many of these so called chinese inventions are not even chinese inventions. European inventions make chins inventions look like kids toys.

Europeans did not adopt chinese inventions. Majority of White inventions were discovered by White people. The important thing to remember is that Europeans discovered it on thier own. wether or not some other had it beforehand.
Electricity, 4 stroke, 2 stroke, deisel/ elcetric, steam engine, helicopter, plane, jet plane, cars , heavy duty machinery, ec are Wholly White inventions.

Without the chinese inventions, the europeans could have never invented these stuff you mentioned. While china was busy inventing stuff the europeans didn’t even have clothes on, that’s why their statues show their genitals, lol. Don’t forget that china, with over 5000 years of documented history, was one of the most advanced ancient civilizations besides the romans, egyptians, greeks, persians and mayan. The europeans “stole/borrowed” most of the inventions like Marco Polo did. British got more advanced through some of the chinese inventions i.e. compass, conquered the seas and occupied china and stole more things like tea, spices, silk (see silk road), etc. And without the compass, even Columbus wouldn’t have made it to the “new world”. Shipbuilding was also one of the chinese inventions, they built vast “floating fortresses” the size of 4-5 oil tankers to support their armies. You’re just probably too arrogant and proud on your nation.

Around 2300 years ago, when no one in Europe or the Middle East could melt even one ounce of iron the Chinese were casting multi-ton iron objects. It was not until the mid-1700’s in Europe that such feats of metallurgy were achieved in Britain, the technically most advanced country of Europe. The early success in iron-casting in China was due to a superior form of bellows that delivered a continuous stream of air to a furnace instead of an interrupted stream as from the type of bellows used in the West. No one beforehand would have given much thought or attention to such a seemingly unimportant device as the Chinese bellows, but it turned out to be a crucial technological development.
But ancient China was not just technically advanced in iron-making. In a wide variety of technical fields China of 300 BCE was many centuries ahead of Europe and the Middle East. And what happened to China that it stagnated technologically so that by the nineteenth century it was so far behind the West that it was weak and primitive? China had regressed so much that almost everyone, in China as well as the West, had forgotten that China was once technically far advanced compared to the West.
The answer is that Qin Shihuang, the king of the state of Qin (Ch’in) in western China, conquered the six other Chinese kingdoms, uniting them into one empire and created a class of bureaucrats to run and regulate it. He created this bureaucracy to centralize control and break the power of feudalists who were always usurping the power of the central authorities. The Qin Empire did not last long after the death of its founder.
The Qin bureaucrats were of a different type than the bureaucrats who were later chosen under the Han Empire. The Qin bureaucrats were hard-nosed administrators who adhered to a philosophy of administration called Legalism. Legalism was a totalitarian ideology that, among other things, held that books and scholarship were a waste of resources. They burned books and buried some scholars alive to discourage that waste of time.
After the Qin Empire collapsed the State of Han rose to power but kept some of the instituitions of Qin. Their empire also was to be run by bureaucrats but the Han bureaucrats, called mandarins, were to be followers of the Confucian doctrines and were chosen through a competitive examination based upon history, literature and philosophy.
Instead of being ruled by philosopher-kings the China of the Han Empire and thereafter was ruled by scholar-bureaucrats who over time stultified the civilization. The Mandarins were a privileged class and did not want anyone disturbing their status quo and endangering the system. Over the centuries the heavy hands of these bureaucrats slowed the previously dynamic society of China to a standstill and ultimately caused it to regress. But before considering the stagnation and regression it is enlightening to review how stunning was the ancient flowering of Chinese civilization.

Here’s another awesome invention…
Mechanical clock mechanisms: Accurate mechanical clocks were developed in ancient China because of a belief in a form of astrology that was based upon the moment of conception rather than the time of birth. Retainers listened outside the royal bedrooms to record the possible times of conception of royal children. This was considered important enough that considerable effort was devoted to developing accurate timing mechanisms. These clock mechanisms were borrowed in the West and perfected for other purposes. When Jesuits presented such mechanical clocks to the Chinese emperor many centuries later the technology had be forgotten in China and no one knew that the mechanical clock had been invented in China.

Some people are just so ignorant…
Especially richard the white.
Get a life and go suck on a dick.
The Chinese has made a long way since then.
Especially for that time period; inventing things that are still used today, that’s pretty superior.
You’re a retard.

Most of the so called evidence that supports such claims are flimsy and boastful. Drawings or a sentence that mentions these inventions in some ancient text do not amount to substantial evidence. Even more so when much of those documents are reprints and not the original documents.
Chinese archaeologist are also trying to tell us that Chinese people evolved separately from the rest of the world. In other words they are unique. A special race. A chosen race. Scary huh? Reminds you of something that happened in Germany in the 1940s?

Han-chinese is not even a single ethnic group, but is an assimilation of hundreds of ethnicity, each having their own unique culture and very different languages and customs before they were united and forced to speak one single language when China was formed thousands of years ago.

there is nothing here about why was ancient chinese ice cream made?, what materials were used to make it?, what purpose did it serve?, how did it affect society?, did it appear in any other historical times?, is it still used today?how and where?.

To some Idiots! I humbly present here below a few lines of facts that I have learned in history and researched. Great details should be found from the writings of those adventurers and Jesuits who traveled to China since 12th century.
Politics (republic) was systemically invented in ancient Rome. Communism was invented in 19th Germany. Democracy was invented 200 BC in China when free thoughts, public debates, and publications were wildly practiced among daily lives. Believe it or not, many great thinkers at the so-called Warring States period spanning over 200 years freely traveled across many states and served as advisors to the kings not of their native states. It was then democratic court debate-decision making system was invented.
The paper was invented in ancient China- a fact has been always recognized by all credible experts. The movable type printing system was invented in China (about 1000 AD) 400 years ahead of Europe yet to no great use. The Chinese writing system consists of 4000+ characters and is way too complicated to allow fast printing practice with other techniques available then. By contrast, systems of limited number of letters (26 in English) facilitated significantly the spread of knowledge and thoughts in Renaissance Europe.
And sadly, the gunpowder that the Chinese invented for celebration purposes (meant to celebrate peace civilization, and humanity) was many centuries later developed to produce weaponry by the West, which exploited the Chinese (16-18th AD) using their own inventions.
The Chinese also invented compass and highly sophisticated vessel making techniques. They have mastered the navigation 1000 BC. The world witnessed, with envious eye, their magnificent sail of vast ocean territories in their astonishing 400-ft navy ships in early 15th century, while everybody else sailed in small boats (Columbus 50-ft boat).

The Chinese writing system consists of 4000 characters and is way too complicated to allow fast printing practice with other techniques available then.

Ancient Chinese also invented Book Printing, by using stamps of words;
and if I remembered correctly, they also invented kite, but the orinigal purpose was for war signaling.

Paper money is not a good thing. Paper money is horrible – it’s a way for money printers to cheat people out of their wealth and life savings. Why would you even put this on the list?

Ancient Egyptian Religion
The religion of the Ancient Egyptians was extremely important to them and touched every aspect of their life. The religion of Ancient Egypt was a polytheistic religion (with many gods). There was just one short period of monotheism (the worship of one god), during the reign of Akhenaten – who became known as the Heretic Pharaoh.
Ancient Egyptian Religion – The Gods and Goddesses
The Egyptian Gods numbered nearly 2000. The main Egyptian Gods and Goddesses were fundamental to the Ancient Egyptian religion and fundamental to their beliefs. The main gods were worshipped throughout the whole of Egypt but many minor gods had just a local following. There were massive temples built to the gods but small shrines were also found in the homes of the Ancient Egyptians. In difficult times Egyptian Gods were offered various gifts, which were accepted by the priests and priestesses who offered prayers on behalf of the donor.
Egyptian Gods & Goddesses – Main Beliefs of the Egyptians
The religion of the Ancient Egyptians encompassed the following fundamental beliefs:
The Priests evolved a Family tree of the main Egyptian Gods and Goddesses to explain how some of the Gods and Goddesses were related.
Life and Death were seen as stages of progress to a better life in the next world
All Egyptians provided for their afterlives according to their earthly means
The Ancient Egyptian Priests evolved a creation myth, or cosmogny, to explain how some of the Gods and Goddesses came into being and the the nature and genesis of the universe
The priests then evolved a family tree to explain how some of the Gods and Goddesses in the religion were related
In the Ancient Egyptian religion certain animals were seen as sacred as they believed that the Spirit of a God resided in these animals which were revered and worshipped as reincarnated Gods during their lifetimes
Mummification – The Egyptians believed that preserving the body in death was important to keep their soul alive. In the process of mummification the brain and the internal organs, except the heart, were removed. The Ancient Egyptians believed that a physical body was essential for an eternal life for the deceased. Without a physical body the soul had no place to dwell and became restless forever
Tombs – Tomb decorations carried messages affirming the religious beliefs of the person
The Underworld – Definition: The Underworld, called Duat, was a land of great dangers through which every Egyptian would need to pass through after death according to the beliefs of the Ancient Egyptian religion
The Book of the Dead – Definition: A guidebook known as the Book of the Dead which contained spells and instructions to ensure safe passage through the dangers of the Underworld. Funeral prayers and spells were chanted to Egyptian Gods and a papyrus scroll of the Book of the Dead was buried with the Ancient Egyptians
Hall of the Two Truths – The God of the Dead Anubis would lead the dead in the Underworld at the Hall of Two Truths to a set of scales where his or her heart was weighed against the feather of truth and their fate would be decided – either entrance into the perfect afterlife or to be sent to the Devourer of the Dead
The Afterlife – A perfect existence in an ideal version of Egypt. Ancient Egyptians provided for their afterlives according to their earthly means
Temples were believed to be the dwelling place of the Egyptian Gods and Goddesses. Only priests and priestesses, and the Pharaoh, were allowed inside the temples. The common folk were only allowed access to the temple forecourts
Statues of the Gods – Statues of the Gods and Goddesses were believed in the Ancient Egyptian religion to be living embodiments of the deities. The statues were revered and offered prayers together with physical items such as food and drink. The statues were washed, oiled and adorned with make-up, jewelry and clothes
Divine Kingship – The Egyptian Pharaohs were also believed to be living Gods in the Ancient Egyptian religion
Pharaohs believed that they became gods in the afterlife
Ancient Egyptians believed that as long as a pharaoh’s name was remembered, the king would live on through eternity
Pyramids and other monuments such as tombs and obelisks were inscribed with the names of Pharaohs and scenes that represented their earthly lives
The Ancient Egyptian religion held the belief that each person was thought to have three souls:
The “Ka” – “soul” or “vital energy” – a “double” of a living person. The heart was considered to be the seat of the Ka
The “Ba” – said to emerge from the body at death, similar to a ghost who could visit previous haunts of the mortal world
The “Akhu” – centerpoint of each person’s divine soul
