1794

War in Holland.

In 1794, the Netherlands Campaign gave Wellington the opportunity to really learn the facts about fighting a battle.  He acted calmly and controlled his troops reasonably.  He found that the battle was more successful when the British army attacked the French columns in line and also noted, in some cases, how naval attacks could prove effective together with land battles.  When Arthur served in India, he learned by reading books some Indian history, languages… and even some military skills and techniques as well as the necessity of food and the importance of supply.

By 1808, Wellington had then himself planned the Portugal campaign.  For security reasons, fortified the Torres Vendras bills.  As a successful general, he was very patient with his troops and insisted greatly for the disciplining of his fellow soldiers.  He kept his troops to the minimum and their way of living was very simple but useful.  Wellington would himself spy the enemies with a rapid horse at his disposal.
