2009: The Confederate USA
In 1865 the USA was joined once again after a long conflict between brothers. We were put on a collision course with history. But what if the South won? What would be different? Here is how I think the USA would be like.
In 1865 the Civil War came to an end. The country united and brothers learned once again to love. The people of the United States became one again, and focused on one goal. In succeeding as a whole. World War I, the Second World War, A man on the moon, all of which were a direct result of the country united. We were put on a collision course with what is now history. But what if the outcome of the Civil War was different? What if the confederate Army won the Civil War? What would the United States be like today? In this paper I will examine what I believe would be different, good and bad, and in the end, I will determine if we would be any better off than we are now.
Economy
The first thing I am going to examine is our economy. The most pressing issue is without a doubt slavery. One of the most inhumane parts of our past. But would it of been abolished had the Confederacy triumphed. You can say that eventually they would of realized it was wrong, but I do not believe so. I do believe however that it would not be only African Americans, but all immigrants. Any person that was brought here could and would be sold into slavery. Slavery would not be as primitive though, health care would persist and maybe even some pay. It would have evolved into the equivalent of minimum wage jobs today, but the worker’s would be the property of the employee.
The second aspect of the economy I will examine is the base of it. Today the economy is very industrialized; we rely heavily on the stock market, and that of the housing and banks, as well as automobiles and many other things like the media. But if the Confederacy triumphed what would our economy be like today? I believe that we would be more of a farming culture. When the Confederates won the war they would of believed that Industry played second fiddle to farming. The Economy today has about .6%( 2007 Est.), which calculates to a little less than two million farmers and fisherman. Of our three hundred million people in our country that is a small amount. We would still have minor industry, but we would most likely have a far greater number of farms. As a result our country would be far more self reliant. We would produce much of our own food. This would give us a bigger base for our economy and even more revenue by selling products more often. But of course what repercussions would that have on the world today? There is no telling what the world would be like now without our industries but it would be an astronomical difference. Another thing to examine would be our primary fuel source.
