27: The Cool Age to Die, Dude
Through the years, a disproportionate amount of celebrities (especially musicians) have sadly died at the sprightly age of twenty-seven. I’ve researched more than thirty celebrities who’ve all died at this age, and couldn’t help noticing at the point of writing this up, that the number seven appears in each and every one of the dates associated with their births or deaths. Spooky, eh?
I’m sorry I cannot use most of the images at this time, but I’ve linked to the pages where you can find them if you wish.
Brian Jones
Name: Lewis Brian Hopkin Jones
Birth: 28.02.42
Where: Gloucestershire, England
Work in brief: Jones was one of the founding members of the popular English rock group, The Rolling Stones. He was also a talented musician, known to play among other instruments, the harmonica, the guitar, the sitar, and the organ
Life in brief: A product of musical parents, his mother was a talented piano teacher and his dad, (an engineer) played the piano and organ, and led the choir at his local church.
Died: 03.07.69
Cause of death: drowning in a swimming pool, following a serious bout of depression and substance abuse.
Jimi Hendricks
Name: Johnny Allen Hendrix
Birth: 27.11.42
Where: Washington, USA.
Work in brief: He’s known for playing the guitar left-handed, but as well as being a musician, he was a fabulous baritone singer, songwriter and respected producer. He was also a recipient of many coveted rock music awards, both in his lifetime and after his death.
Life in brief: Hendrix family went through very difficult times, which resulted in his two sisters and a younger brother (all with different special needs) being given up for adoption at an early age.
Died: 18.09.70
Cause of death: choking on his own vomit following an overdose of sleeping pills.
Janis Joplin
Name: Janis Lyn Joplin
Birth: 19.01.43
Where: Texas, USA
Work in brief: She was a singer, songwriter, music arranger, and guitar player. Joplin was most popularly known for being the lead singer of the rock band Big Brother, The Holding Company, and also for Full Tilt. She later had a successful career as a solo artist.
Life in brief: She was a self-described ‘outcast’ at school because of her weight, terrible skin problems and the fact that she ‘hung out with blacks.’ This position she held as an outsider to popular trends, served to strengthen her career as a musician, in giving her the freedom to be original and daring.
Died: 04.10.70
Cause of death: possible heroin overdose
Jim Morrison
Name: James Douglas Morrison

Very spooky! And so tragic. Seems that talent, fame, and money don’t bring about the happy life that most untalented average wannabes think it will.
I vaguely remember Debby Harris from Blondie singing “Die young, stay pretty” – but I can’t remember if it was a song title or an album, or just a lyric in a song. I’m pretty sure she is still alive – but far too many others have followed her advice.

Maybe 27 is an unlucky number.

I’ve read about all these people before but never realized they all were 27 when died. Good perspective.

Musicians do seem to have a shorter life span than the average human being.

Great article. I remember the member of the manic street preachers going missing. Has he been presumed dead now? Music and death seem to go hand in hand, or could it be creativity? There lies another article. Well researched

Interesting, only the other day I was debating with a friend of mine whether Richey Edwards was in fact dead or alive. Of all of them, he’s the only one that it is not possible to confirm either way. It is terribly sad so many losses, but there seem to be two other common threads in their all too brief lives, those conceived and born in wartime, and the next generation, born on the back of the baby boom in the sixties and seventies…. I wonder if that is in anyway significant too.

I came close to doing the same. Up until I turned twenty seven, I had planned on overdosing or assumed it would happen at that age. When I got into the situation where it did in fact, start to take place – I bailed out when I became aware and checked into rehab. I never thought that I would make it to twenty eight. Glad that I did not follow in those foot steps . . . now

Thanks for all your feedback,everyone.
Parish, I’m glad that you got help to get your life back on track. Twenty-seven is way too young to die. Because of their experiences and life’s lessons people have so much to give in their later years, not only to their children, but to the world around them.
