Undeniably, Ferdinand Magellan is one of the most popular navigators/sailors in the world. This daring Portuguese voyager, who served for the Spanish monarchy, proved to the whole world that the Earth is indeed round. He proved this by reaching the East by sailing west.

Here are some important and interesting facts about Ferdinand Magellan.

1. The expedition led by Magellan was the first to sail all the way around the world proving that the Earth is round.

2. Although Sebastian De Elcano is regarded as the first circumnavigator of the Erath, it was Ferdinand Magellan who first circumnavigated the Earth in two sailings.

3. He attained this firstly, by sailing east to Asia from Spain via Cape of Good Hope in Africa; and secondly by reaching the East from Spain via Atlantic and Pacific Ocean by sailing west.

4. Ferdinand Magellan was originally a Portuguese and was born in Portugal in 1480. His Portuguese name is Fernao Magalhaes.

5. He was 25 years of age when he first went to the sea and joined the Portuguese fleet and served in India, Indonesia and Malaysia.

6. The land on the East discovered by the West was then known as East Indies.

7. Ferdinand Magellan was a “limp”. He incurred this at the age of 33 when he fought and wounded against Morocco in 1513.

8. He was promoted for the wound he incurred but his promotion was disapproved by the king of Portugal.

9. Despite of this, he approached the king and laid his plan for a voyage to the East Indies by sailing west. Magellan’s request for a fleet was denied by the king.

10. Enraged with anger, he denounced his Portuguese citizenship and moved to Spain. Although he was called traitor by Portuguese, he never returned to Portugal again.

11. Ferdinand Magellan {English form} changed his Portuguese name to Fernando Magallanes.

12. A friend of his introduced him to the Spanish royalties. He then asked the king of Spain to finance a westbound expedition and the Spanish monarch readily accepted it and even offered Magellan a share in the profits.

13. He was given 5 ships namely; Victoria, Santiago, San Antonio, Trinidad and Concepcion. The Trinidad is the flagship and was piloted by Magellan. The Trinidad is a caravel and the rest are carracks.
